A misguided soul was asking in the NEWSCIENTIST for a cubic centimeter paper weight to keep on his desk composed soley of neutrons and wondered how much it would weigh.
My estimate based on the size of our Sun and the size of neutron stars is 1.25*10^11 Kg.
He also asks "how would I contain it", I can only reply 'with difficuly'.
Does anyone have a better figure

How to contain it: no way. Not for the present technology, at least.

Yep as neutrons are not charged, you can't even do anything funky with electromagnetic fields so the only way to hold them together is with gravity, so very difficult to achieve outside a neutron star. I guess if you built an appropriately designed nuclear bomb you might be able to contain it inertially... for a few nanoseconds.

80 to 2000 actually.

Yes, it would be a very big problem to contain it!
Another science-fiction way to do it could be to use an incredibly powerful beam of particles (e.g. photons) directed upward against the object.

what about giant optical tweezers?  lol

you want to know how to contain that many neutrons?  break them up and fuse them with protons to make nucleii, then they'll be stable. lol  honestly, i have no idea.

The problem with doing that is that the 1cm cube will have grown to one of about 100m side leaving little room on the desk.

well in fairness, the guy never said how big his desk was.  if he can afford a paperweight made out of a neutron star on his salary, i would guess his desk could be quite large. ;)
