Magic whiteboard animation (video)

"To start with this looks like an interactive whiteboard - a computer display projected onto a wall, with a sensor to detect what you're drawing with a special marker. That in itself is pretty cool, but nothing new. But by adding a few special symbols, like crosses, arrows and circles, and then pressing a button the drawing comes to life!

The computer behind the display understands gravity, wheels and springs, and can animate your drawings and make them obey the laws of physics. Seriously cool, it brings a whole new dimension to etch-a-sketch."

The most impressive "demo" begins 2min 30sec into this video.

I think I saw something very similar at microsoft research in Cambridge a couple of years ago - I think they were sponsering the research, not sure if that helps...

Hey Neil, What is that you have drawn There? At first I thought it was a picture to go with , Rub a dub dub, Three men in a tub!!LOL Then I further looked and am baffled indeed! Perhaps its modern Art!LOL You are too funny.. Where do you get something like that? It really is quite cool! I woder is it easier then using the diagram program on here as my mouse finds it difficult to be smooth in my drawing in that program?

That is rather cool..
We have them at school, except there is a large panel (60 inches or so) which the projection is beamed  on.. And the board is touch sensitive, which you have to use with a certain pen and then it reacts..

But I'm assuming this has nothing to do with a board, but simply that the pen and the projector have a transmitting thing, so the projector knows where the pen is?

The software in use looks like "Interactive Physics".

http://www.design-simulation.com/ip/index.php

Not the software to communicate the drawings to the computer or to translate the hand drawings into simulated objects, but the software doing the simulation. All the tools look very much like this software.

I used it for a while but it did not jive well with the Middle Level kids and my design & technology curriculum. Maybe for a physics teacher. I now SWEAR by "Armadillo Run". At no time during my teaching career did I ever spend $20 wiser that with this software.
