Light travels 10 meters how fast?
« on: 30/10/2006 21:17:13 »
Here's a basic question.

Measured in seconds, how fast does light travel 10 meters?

Could you show me how you came up with the answer?

Thanks.

Light travels at 300,000 Km/S hence to travel 10 meters would take 1/30 micro seconds

300,000 km/sec  =300,000,000 m/sec  three hundred million meteres per second.

so ten metres in  1/ 30,000,000 sec or  1/30 microseconds as stated

                           -6
this is 0.033  x10      or 0.00000003333 seconds

however I always found it best to think of it travelling about a foot in about one nanosecond  which  gets the scale right

Seven zeros... That's what I thought at first, but a calculator convinced me otherwise.

Thanks.

This erroneous value for 'c' just shows the folly of mixing metric and imperial units!

Ok, but, in case, it's 186,000 miles/hour.

Seems very slow light to me, if it is indeed miles/hour and not miles/second !
