Is the Rorshach Inkblot Test pseudoscience?
« on: 03/05/2015 20:30:33 »
Is it possible to investigate personality in detail with it?

It's similar to "Black box testing", which is scientific.

People often see patterns, even when there is no pattern.
By considering what people see in these inkblots, the analyst gets an idea of what things the patient thinks about, fears or obsesses about.
I think the experience/guesswork comes in turning a set of answers into a helpful treatment for a patient.

A lot depends on a range of factors; for example:

Who is administering the test?
Who is taking the test, and why?
How are the results interpreted?
What other factors are considered?

I have newer used this test, but when writing a paper on risk assessment, I administered a suicide intent scale to a random group of people admitted the Accident and Emergency Dept. of the hospital in which I was based.  For my first interpretation I took nothing into account other than the answers given by the patients.  The person who had the highest score (i.e. was the most serious suicide risk) was a teenage girl who had taken a small overdose of birth control pills.  Subsequent investigation revealed her real motive, which certainly was not to kill herself.

I think the Rorschach test has value provided it is not seen as some magic formula that automatically tells you anything.

As for me some results are pretty accurate.

What do you think about Rorschach Test?
Welcome to the forum. I detest that test. I had to take one in order to be reconfirmed for disability. The shrink ran me through those inkblots and I was forced to tell him what I saw. In fact I say nothing and that's what I told him. That was unacceptable to him so I made things up to satisfy them. So he abused the purpose of the test like a shear idiot.

I was once given one at a job interview and told it was to see if you were on drugs! I looked it up later and read that Rorshach noticed different responses in schizophrenic patients, but I wasn't impressed by the research method.

I think if you tell them you see butterflies they are happy, but avoid squashed hedgehogs.

Because they are created by folding the page down the middle, you could see almost anything with bilateral symmetry (ie many living things).

But the shapes are a bit too irregular to see machines (as Scientists and Engineers might be inclined to see).

#1 Two crows riding a motorbike doing a stunt with one hanging out from either side. None of the options provided fit with what I see so I refuse to select them, and it's preventing me from moving on to the next image.

A system isn't on to a winner when the longest section of the wiki page is headed "controversy"
