could you tell me the different joints of the human body. the one i kno is hinge i dont kno the rest so could yu pleese say what they are :)

Contrary to popular teenage belief, a joint is not just a roll of cannabis leaves, it's also a point, or articulation, where two bones meet. There are three types of joint which can be classified as:

a) fixed (immovable)
b) slightly mobile
c) freely mobile

Fixed, immobile joints
These are referred to as synarthroses. They consist of bones rigidly anchored together and covered by fibrous connective tissue. An example of this type of joint are the sutures connecting the bones of the skull.

Slightly mobile joints
These are known as amphiarthroses and consist of bones connected by hyaline (fibro) cartilage. Examples include the symphisis pubis and the linkage between the ribs and the sternum.

Freely mobile joints
Disarthrosis type joints, as they are known, make up the bulk of the body's articulations and come in six types:

Ball and Socket - the end of one bone is shaped like a ball and fits into a cartilage-lined cup formed by a second bone. The hip joint and the shoulder joint are ball and sockets. The benefit of this type of joint is that it can support movement in a wide range of directions.

Hinge Joints - the rounded end of one bone rests in a concave depression in the second. Joints of this type, which includes the elbow and knee, can only flex or extend. No rotation is possible.

Pivot Joints - A rounded or conical surface from one bone fits into a ring created by the second. The odontoid peg (dens) of second cervical vertebra (C2) articulates with the first cervical vertebra (C1) in this way. A tendon running transversely across C1 holds the dens in place.

Gliding Joints - Flat surfaces move against each other to make sliding or twisting movements. The tarsals in the foot and carpals in the ankle are examples of this type of joint.

Condyloid Joints - You find these, quite literally, at the tips of your fingers. They are the joints between the metacarpals (the bones of the hands) and the phalanges (the small bones in each finger). They are also found in the equivalent sites in the feet, between the phalanges and the metatarsals (those bones made famous by Wayne Rooney and David Beckham).

Saddle Joints - you have only two of these in the body, one in each thumb. Both bones making up the joint have both a convex and a concave region, with each plugging into the corresponding structure of the other.
