Christina Simon  asked the Naked Scientists:

Is it ever possible to get ALL the germs off my hands?
What do you think?

Not a problem.

Unless you were planning on being able to still have their use  afterwards,

In 508 BC, Gaius Mucius Scaevola showed King Lars Porsena and the Clusians that Romans had true grit by sticking his right hand into the fire (for 3 minutes without so much as a flinch) which the Clusians were about to execute him with. That would kill all the germs. It would take something of that order.

NB: The cognomen "Scaevola" meAns "Leftie".

Some bacteria create spores that can survive boiling, so I doubt there's much less than sticking your hands in the fire that would sterilise them completely. And I don't think antibacterial chemicals work well enough against spores either to do the job.

No you can't. The question is what is practical for good hygiene.
Many hospitals and CDC recommend soap & water, thorough washing while singing Happy Birthday song through twice.
Like Wolfkeeper I don't think antibacterial wipes or gels work on all bacteria, so don't rely on them.

Nor would you want to do that.

The Special Forces teach it to guerrillas as "bizonal security". The peasants warn the boyos when government troops are about (zone 1) and the guerrillas mount a constant perimeter guard (zone 2).

My skin is colonized with a collection of bacteria that function as Pecos Bill's posse. I got them from Mom, you know, and for all I know they came from Fifeshire with her back in the day.

When a strange bacterium lands on my skin, the posse starts laying down harassing fire. If the bugs get past your skin, then the heavies kick in. That's what happened to the zit on my nose yesterday, in fact.

If you kill off the home guard, then the more fool you.

Ordinary soap and water will invariably do the job, but if you must, use an anti-bacterial soap, dry with a clean towel and then apply some alcohol.

Other means could be adopted, but the process might be far more damaging to your skin than would be advisable.

You can use all the soap and water that you wish, but if you are wearing a ring or have long nails then the hygiene gods will turn their faces away from you.

And what will happen if you turn off the same tap that the homeless street monster touched before you?
