Nope. This fruit is not picked from a tree.

So it's grown in the ground? And it is technically a fruit? Is it related to a melon?

The roots grow in the ground ;) and the fruit rises directly from it. There is no stem.

Perhaps I should clarify what I mean by "no stem". There is no woody structure such as you would get for tomatoes or melons for example, from which you would pick the "fuit". It would be collected as a whole, and the whole thing (less roots) can be eaten after cooking.

I'm nipping out for some lunch now. Shall I tell you what it is when I get back? Or let me know if you would like further clues.

The ginger we eat is the rhizome part of the plant, and so is not above ground. However, the roots of this plant are very important, and have their own classification.

Is it native to Europe? Usually grown in Europe/Germany?

It is technically a sort of fruit, I suppose - it's the fruiting body of something. You should be just about there!

Are you a fun guy ?.

RD and Monikas come in at the final to pick up C4M's glory!

It is the edible mushroom Boletus edulis , more commonly known as the Cep, Penny Bun, Porcini or Herrenpilz. This is one that I picked from the forest behind my apartment in the Black Forest.

Well played all, with special perseverance credit going to C4M!

Thanks both! It's increasingly uncommon to find them due to over-picking - Bay boletes are much more abundant, and I could collect perhaps 2kg (wet-weight) per autumn. They're still very tasty in a risotto, however!

Who's next?

It reminds me of the pattern that was on the curtains in our old caravan....
