Are all the adverts I now see on TNS legit ?
« on: 25/11/2015 13:04:01 »
I just ran my browser without an ad-blocker, (which I rarely do), and for the first time I saw a rash of adverts on this forum.

Some look legit : the kind of thing which appears on YouTube , but the "infolinks" pop-up looked like an adware infection of my browser.

Are all these adverts supposed to be appearing on TNS forum ?.

[ I tried different forums & different browsers , the infolinks pop-up seems specific to this forum , if so not browser infection ]

I have just written to Infolinks, asking them to explain tot heir advertisers that, now they have infected this site, I will never use any of their products or services, and I will use all means at my disposal to discourage others.

So website-infection rather than browser-infection.

Infolinks claim their service is opt-in ...

Infolinks is not installed onto your browser or computer, but rather onto individual websites by their owners. Like any other form of advertisement, only the website owner can put it on or remove it from his site.

The "NoScript" browser-plugin warns "infolinks" is a potential Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attempt ...

Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities are usually programming errors made by web developers, which allow an attacker to inject his own malicious code from a certain site into a different site.

Attached is a screen-grab of TNS forum on 30th November, (when I'm not logged-in).

The "Sponsored content by Infolinks" adverts are still visible at the bottom of the page.
[ If I activate "NoScript" plugin it blocks the "Infolinks" adverts , and issues the warning : "NoScript filtered a potential cross-site scripting (XSS) attempt ..." ].

Infolinks [ & Vigilink ] adverts remain after I have logged-in to TNS.

The only good news is the intrusive infolinks pop-up apparently has gone.

When logged-in to TNS I am shown an InfoLinks advert when I click on a link in the TNS forum to an external site , ( in this case the BBC ) , see attached.
