How does one differentiate between matter and antimatter ?? The Universe has more matter than anti matter but just barely ? How do we know that?? If the contrary were true what would happen??

If Antimatter touches Matter, it explodes into gamma rays and a shower of other particles.

In a vacuum, where antiparticles don't run into any other particles, you can distinguish them with a magnetic field, which causes matter & antimatter to rotate in different directions, due to their opposing charges.

By convention, our bodies and the Earth are made out of "Matter".
  • This means that your clothes, car and atmosphere are made of matter, since they don't explode when you touch them.
  • The Solar wind brushes against Earth's atmosphere and the other planets, so the Solar System is made of matter.
  • The Solar wind also runs into the interstellar medium, so our galaxy is also matter.
  • The same logic applies to our galactic cluster.
  • We think that our part of the universe is made almost totally of matter.

It is a major unsolved mystery in Physics about why this is so.

If the universe were made almost totally of antimatter, it would behave pretty much the way we see it now.
But there is that "unknown" reason for matter/antimatter asymmetry, which may become visible in an antimatter universe.
