Tim Lew  asked the Naked Scientists:
I really liked your answer regarding being swallowed by an ORCA. However, could you please answer what would happen if you were swallowed by a Blue Whale. I am trying to write a story of transporting some dogs across the sea in the stomach of a Blue whale and wanted to know would the dogs survive the inside of a Blue Whale for several weeks?

I know it is an unlikely question but if a Blue Whale accidentally swallowed an animal like a dog, I am wondering if it would be possible for the animal to make an exit unharmed.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

For a start it will have to be a small dog ...

... a blue whale's oesophagus or gullet is a mere 4 inches or 10 cm in diameter, so it would have problems swallowing a whole grapefruit ...

As RD pointed out, a Blue Whale could not swallow a dog, unless the dog were no bigger than a grapefruit. As for an Orca, being a toothed dolphin, it would bite its prey, not swallow it whole.

Even if it were possible, several days in a stomach swimming in acidic digestive fluids would kill. By several weeks the contents of the stomach would have emptied many times over.

Not to mention suffocation, which would probably take a few minutes.
