Does eating certain foods affect sleep?
« on: 15/03/2016 19:50:01 »
Jane Good asked the Naked Scientists:
   Dear Naked Scientist

Can you solve this enigma?  Is there any relation between eating certain foods and lack of sleep?  Why does someone become so food sensitive that the sleep mechanism stops working completely.  This question has troubled me for many years and I haven't found an answer.  Hope you can solve it.
What do you think?

Well, let's see here. Coffee contains caffeine; chocolate contains theobromine. These stimulants will tend to keep you awake. Sunflower seeds in substantial quantities with yogurt will be quite indigestible, which will have like effect.  Certain dairy products contain some protein that tends to have sedative effect, as do beans. Eat them together and it can be like a drug.
