Is there a cure for severe hiccups?
« on: 20/05/2016 18:50:02 »
mary c b jones  asked the Naked Scientists:
   Dear Chris,
Please can you help my husband, he gets a severe burping problems
He has had a few tests, can't remember names of tests, as he is at work.
When he gets this problem it is very embarrassing for him, especially as he works in an office.
He has been  given Losec and Mylanta and they don't work. His diet is pretty good,
Home made muselie for breakfast
(no meat at all) for dinner he likes sea food........pasta and vegetables
Wholemeal bread, he mainly does juicing, doesn't smoke and very rarely drinks alcohol
He is 6ft has a good physique, bit of a stomach.
It's a worry, as this time it seems to be more severe and lasting longer...
Is there something he can take to relieve this stressful condition
                    Please can you help
                              Thank you so much,
                                  Mary

ps. I personally thank you for putting me on the right path
I have to wait until the antibiotics are out of my system to get
a CT scan, to see if I have kidney stones and or an infection.
What do you think?

... severe hiccups ... severe burping problems

hiatus hernia is a common cause of chronic hiccups / burping ... https://www.google.com/#q=%22hiatus+hernia%22+belching+OR+hiccups

The kidney stones will still be present, even with antibiotics in your system. Kidney stones containing Calcium will still be visible on the CT scan; however, some rarer uric acid kidney stones (or some from medicine residues) will not show up so well on a CT machine.

I can see that antibiotics could suppress an infection, so the presence of an infection may not be so easy to detect with antibiotics still active. But I would have thought that soft-tissue problems like a kidney or urinary tract infection would be more visible on an ultrasound than on a CT scan?

Alan, you are the expert here...
