Why do we have to sleep?

Sleep deprivation if it is profound and goes on long enough it can kill you!

But why?

I'm a little rusty on neurobiology, but if memory serves (lol), it's because the nerve cells within the brain tissue get backed up with cellular waste products. This is because the brain tissue swells when we are awake (possibly to provide better neuron connections) and channels for removing waste become narrow or completely closed. When we sleep the brain relaxes from this state enough to let the channels open so the waste products can be removed.

Mr Alan, perhaps you'd like to read this article from Scientific American.

Barin Drain by Maiken Nedergaard and Steven A. Goldman.

An internal plumbing system rids the brain of toxic wastes. Sleep is when this cleanup ritual occurs.

I'm not sure how legal is accessing this source.

Perhaps you can read it from the March 2016 magazine (Pages 38-41 if it's the UK-European edition).
