Did Time Exist Before The Universe was created?
« on: 26/06/2016 22:05:24 »
I'm not too all sure as to whether this is a philosophy/metaphysics question other than physics, but lets see what others think first.
Suffice to say, the Big Bang theory implies time came into existences at the moment of the singularity of the cosmos (t = 0); other theories predict very different things.

Indeed, time itself began with the big bang singularity.

There's no time without space and no space without time.

The big bang wasn't just the origin of space, but also the origin of time.

As well as there's no space to continue back through the big bang, there's neither time.

Augustine, in the XV century, when answering what God was doing before creating the universe, said wisely that "the world was made with time and not in time". Augustine's God transcended time and was located outside it, thus being responsible for creating time, as well as space and matter.

There's hardly any scientific theory that hasn't been considered before in the rich history of philosophy.

Firstly you have answered the poster with an answer stated as if 100% fact.   You should note the Big Bang theory is a theory and not absolute proof.

killtec -  The theory states that before the big bang nothing existed, not even time itself or space. Obviously there is not 100% proof of this , but this is the most accepted model although I personally would contest it and do not ''buy'' into the logic in any sense.

In my opinion and I am not a scientist, time does not exist and never did , so in answer to your question did time exist before the big bang ?  My answer is no, but also I do not think it exists after the ''big bang '' either. Neither do I personally believe that there was no space before the ''big bang'' on the premise that for any event to happen including a ''big bang'', it would need an existing space to happen in.

Answer me this then Mr. Box: Does the present state of reality change from moment to moment?

Fact number one: This comment came after the question. If there was a before and after, how do you explain the absence of time and the passage of it?

Read my signature: "The more things change, the more they remain the same."

Change is inescapable and change is proof that time has passed.

Einstein once said: "Reality uses time so that everything doesn't happen all at once." This quote may not be verbatim but the essence of the thought is the same.

Indeed it's not 100% guaranteed truth, but the question presupposes the big bang theory and is not questioning it.

All physicists admit that time exists, it's not an illusion, but a physical dimension as real as space.

Perhaps you'd like to read this paper about time as a fundamental and irreversible entity.

Yes , ''things'' change, but ''things'' would change just the same without a thing called time, why does the Universe need a thing called time?

The better question would be did energy exist before the big bang? If the answer you give is yes then you will have zero point energy which will have a wave function that varies. How can this vary without time?

why does the Universe need a thing called time?
Because without the passage of time, the Universe would not have evolved to it's present state. The Universe needs the passage of time for it to evolve.

That which lies between what was and what will be, we call time. You are free to call it what ever you like Mr. Box, but the fact remains that change is taking place and we can measure that rate of change.

Every intelligent scientist I know of calls this rate of change the passage of time. Call this change what ever you like, measure it how ever you wish. Then be puzzled because nobody knows what you're talking about. Maybe it's because you don't speak the same language every other scientist does.

Good luck with that one Mr. Box. That's probably why most of us don't understand 90 per cent of what you continue to mumble about. What ever makes you content Mr. Box. Enjoy your solitude because as long as you choose to speak a different language than we do, you'll have plenty of "Time" all to your self.

Pretty much everything we know in science points to the big bang being real, to the tune of like 99.999%, which is honestly good enough for me.  And with that, the answer is then no, time did not exist prior to the big bang. At least our time anyway.  Time in other universes or in the exoverse (my term for for what the multivese "bubbles" would be existing in) may have existed though.  But this we may likely never know...

If energy existed before the big bang, then so did space, energy would need space to exist in, the rudiment of observation and experiment shows us that for things to exist or events to happen there has to be available space for the event to happen in.
The nothing point you all imagine of the big bang is not surrounded by nothing, it is surrounded by darkness which is ''empty'' space.  Try to imagine a single point with your eyes shut, I guarantee around this point of nothing you see darkness.

The Universe needs space not time.

In my opinion time did exist before the Big Bang the Big Band being just the beginning of our universe not the beginning of existence, because existence is eternal, while the universe is finite it had a begging and entropy will make sure it has an end.

Existence of what though?  Are you talking about the multiverse?

And would you agree that it wouldn't have technically been 'our' time since time is woven in spacetime, and our spacetime only began with the big bang?  Though I'm still not certain what the OP was referring to, whether 'our' time or if they were asking about any other universe's time; if they were wondering if other universes existed prior to ours being born from the big bang etc.
