How quickly can you home brew a beer?
« on: 19/07/2016 11:50:02 »
Bobby Bissett  asked the Naked Scientists:
   Hello,

I finally caught up on every podcast and now have some questions of my own for you.

- If I were trapped on an island, or found myself in a post-apocalyptic world, and had the right equipment, how quickly could I make beer?

Cheers,
Bobby Bissett

If you have efficient means of separating live yeast, you can make a drinkable weak sweet beer in a couple of days. Usual practice however is to ferment for a week or two until most of the yeast has been killed by its own excrement (alcohol) or run out of food (sugar) before racking off. If you've nothing better to do on your desert island, stirring will speed the process.
