Ammonia Stuff (Neutralise then fertiliser!)
« on: 07/05/2007 21:02:18 »
Couple of months or so ago, we were making fertilisers from Ammonia.. Ammonium Sulphate I think it was! We neutralised it then it the crystals could be used as a fertiliser!

However, when we were handling this Ammonia stuff, even if you smelt a bit of it, it went right up your nostrils and sent a massive shock to your nose!! It stank really badly and hurt in your nose and shot straight up.

What is it that makes this happen? Apparently it's poisonous or something, and not good for your health! What does/can it do to you?

I think a big reason it hurts is that when ammonia dissolves in the water in your nose and forms an alkali

NH3 + H2O -> NH4+ + OH-

So it is a bit like putting sodium hydroxide up your nose. It is caustic and will probably (amonst other things) turn any fats/cell membranes it meets into soap.

So err.. Fats into soap.. Is that a bad thing? What effect would it have on our body?

Ooooh I know this!!! My new job is cooled with ammonia (meat plant). And we were trained on what to do if there was a leak.

They judge the effects of it in 6 levels of concentration. I will copy what my orientation manual says.

Level 1 - Noticeable odor to those with a sensitive smell.
Level 2 - A few individuals may suffer slight eye irritation.
Level 3 - Noticeable irritation of eyes and nasal passages and upper respiratory tract.
Level 4 - Severe eye irritation. No permanent effect if exposure is less that one-half hour
Level 5 - Serious cough, bronchial spasm. A few minutes of exposure will cause serious injury
Levell 6 - Serious edema, asphyxia. Possible death.

Well the reason that soap kills bacteria is that cell membranes are basically made of fats and if you add soap they dissolve - hence your cells will fall apart. Not good!
