Do we Weigh what we Eat?
« on: 11/05/2007 18:40:25 »
Do we gain weight, on what we eat? Apart from the bone weight, tissue, muscles, organs.. etc.. And the growth of them all.. OK..

Say you are an adult. (Fully-grown middle-aged)

If you eat 1kg of chocolate and go to bed straight away, you usually find your face is swollen and you weigh alot.

Do you weigh 1kg more than you did before eating the chocolate, or more?

From my experiences, if you eat just before you go to sleep without letting it digest, your face gets swollen, and you don't feel good in the morning.

If we eat 100g of something, do we weigh 100g more? Or more than 100g?

Size and weight are not the same thing - you can bloat without putting on weight, and visa versa.

What you weigh must be the difference between what goes into your body and what comes out (the human body is not capable of nuclear fusion or fission, so one is not likely to gain or lose mass through conversion to/from kinetic energy).

What goes into your body is food, water, and air.

What comes out is fæces, urine, sweat, and exhaled air (depleted on O2 and enriched in CO2 and probably water).

Clearly, it is theoretically possible for 100g of food to cause an increase in weight greater than 100g, but only if it causes an increase of absorption of other substances that are absorbed into the body (water or air).  Clearly, food can alter the amount of water retained by the body, but I am not sure that it is likely to alter the amount of air retained by the body, since an increase in O2 absorbition should be matched by an increase of CO2 exhaled, and since CO2 is heaver than  O2, this seems more likely to cause a greater loss of weight than a weight gain.

has a slightly similar theme.

Ya, a similar theme but not quite. I was also wondering that myself, I sleep really hungry, and you don't know in the morning.

What goes up must come down, what goes in must come out.. It's what does not come out that aides in your bodies nutrition and also gain. If you put too much of the bad stuff in in tends to be stored there and not burned up. I think weight gain is similar.. If I eat a big dinner I can fully expect to see a difference on the scales given your scales are pretty accurate. But when I eliminate, then we should be back down again.. anyway that's  what I find.. never weigh until after your morning duties..LOL

Weigh in in the morning before water food or anything, after you have eliminated but before you eat. weigh again  after eating a couple meals.. but do it right before you eliminate to check your weight gain from the food. For the fun of it you could weigh your food and know the total you have eaten by weight,, LOL then when you eliminate you will weigh again and see a difference..I would do it after a day of eating toileting..Seany try it out! LOL
