Do Animals have Accents ?
« on: 23/04/2004 15:40:05 »
As a well spoken English gentleman...I of course do not have an accent :D.....but what about animals ?...do they have regional dialects too ?..I asked a cow and it said 'Baaaa'....so no luck there from one mad cow...:D!!! still...opinions and answers would be most gratefully received.

I've read somewhere that they do, but I don't remember where I read that.

A study on pool frogs from Iberia, Italy and the Balkans showed subtle differences in their croaks leading the researchers to conclude that they had developed 'regional' accents !

Here's the link to the show in which we covered this story :

Thanks Chris, that's great....just goes to prove that in fiction there may always be some fact........

It appears from the article that it was just a matter of happenstance that this discovery was made. Do you know if that is the case ? Was it further deduced that the difference in 'croaks' was interpreted as just a different accent ? or indeed a different language all together ? If it was just an accent then perhaps it's not so important to re-introduce exactly the same sounding frogs...!....perhaps from a non human point of view though, even a subtle change in sound makes a huge difference in all aspects of the animal kingdom eh ?

The analysis of the croaks showed that the difference between them was real. Findings like this are typical in science - you go looking for one thing and accidentally chance upon another.

The phenomenon of local accents and dialects is not peculiar to frogs and humans. Studies have shown that urban birds use a different frequency range in their songs compared with their rural counterparts. We think this is a response to living in a noisier environment and that the birds are naturally selecting frequencies that carry better under those conditions.

Marine mammals, which are also known to be very vocal, similarly have local language. About 2 years ago we interviewed expert in dolphin communication Vincent Janik from the University of St. Andrews - http://www.thenakedscientists.com/html/shows/2002.01.27.htm#interview

And whilst not strictly a language, sexual appetite varies geographically amongst pigeons, it would seem !
