How accurate is diagnosis of epilepsy?

when i was 17 i was diagnosed with epilepsy. i was put on some pretty strong medication and for 12 months lived a zombie like life, the medication made me forgetful and i felt like someone else was living my life and i was just along for the ride.
after 12 months i stopped taking the tablets, 6 months later i told the guy at the hospital this and that i had not experianced any further attacks -fainting and loosing conciousness - he said that i probibly never had epilepsy and that was that.
so, how accurate is the diagnosis of epilepsy?
