You have to go to the seaside to watch it made.  There used to be a rock factory at Blackpool.

For the benefit of the international audience. Rock is a cylindrical sweet usually about 1-2 cm in diameter and 20-30 cm long which contins the name of the seaside resort from which it was obtained.

It is made by boiling sugar solution to be a thick paste stretching and folding it to include some air, colouring some sections and then assembling it as a very big cylinder with the name inside  This is then rolled and stretched to produce the long thin sticks of rock.

Paul of the non-hirsute pate,

I have seen this type of candy made in an old-fashioned candy shop here in town. What is done is that different colored candy is made, let cool until it can be handled by the candy makers and then rolled into 2 foot long "threads" about 2 inches in diameter. Many of these are made and the words are put into a composite bundle of semisolid candy with the smaller, different colored "threads" forming the words. On the outside, a flat piece of candy is wrapped around the bundle. In one case you pictured, there are different colored panels in the oputside wrap.

All of this 2 foot long foot in diameter roll is then rolled repeatedly, getting the diameter down as it is rolled. The "threads" loose their 'roundness' and the whole bundle becomes 30 feet long or so.  When the diameter is small enough the candy is cut into pieces. I once had a link to a company that would make candy with a custom message in it.

I'd rather keep my tooth.
