Fantastic! I had never thought about such a simple thing!
The explanation is that water with alum goes up the tree because of capillarity, then water dries on the cardboard surface and alum crystals form.

Was there a set amount of alum that you used? I have a huge jar of alum that I never use but what a cool science project for the kids at me preschool! Where did you get the green cardboard? I think I will get some and set up a project that the children can do at school! YAYYYYYYYYYYYY! Anastasia Great work! So cool.. Even I had never seen anything like this! I want one too!!! LOL

Basically the tree is made out of something like cardboard which if you put one end in water the water will rise up it because the water is attracted to the fibres which are very close together.

If you dissolve the Alum in the water this will be lifted up the tree with the water, at the top the water evaporates meaning that there is too much Alum dissolved in the water, it the comes out of solution forming crystals.

I have to say it looks very cool
