Dear Authorities on Age

These are dogs:

Nice aren't they ?...notice how one is slightly larger than the other ?

Small dogs usually live longer than large dogs and mongrels usually live longer than thoroughbreds....why's that then ?

Does the same apply to other species ?...humans ?

I just wanna know !!...don't ewe ?

hugs and shmisheys

Neil

Well I know with really really tall people like the tallest guy in the world they said they don't live as long as their hearts have to work so heard to support their large frames. The same goes for an obese person like me. But tall and short yes I think it does in at least really big gigantic people.. I don't however know about the short or small factor.

My understanding is that every animals has about the same number of cell divisions throughout its life, so an animal that has lots of cell divisions in a hurry, will grow big (tall or fat), whereas an animal with slower cell divisions will only be creating new cells fast enough to replace dying cells, so will not actually grow very much, but because it takes longer to have the same number of cell divisions, so it lives longer.

This is also, in my view, why dieting will not recover the years you have lost by getting fat (or tall) - the most it can do is stop you losing more years by getting fatter yet.

THANK YOU very much George,

So does this mean that pending illness or accident a 5ft person has good reason to assume that they will live longer than a 6ft person ? (I'm assumming healthy lifestyles)

All things being equal (which they never are), then yes.

In general, it is considered that the single best predictor of life expectancy is the age at which your parents died (assuming they did not have a traumatic death).

One interesting issue is that Mediterranean people tend to live longer than Scandinavians, and this is argued to be down to diet, but in fact Mediterranean peoples tend to naturally be shorter than Scandinavians.
