How do I not become fat?
« on: 16/08/2007 23:44:17 »
I'm a 14 year old that is SUPER fit. According to my BMI, I am not healthy. I think I am in good shape because you can't see my ribs, I have plenty of muscle, just the right amount of fat, and I'm still skinny! I'm not sure my Muscle or Fat content in my body, but I know its probably just the right amount of both.

I weight 120 pounds, I'm around 5 foot 7 inches.

The only reason I'm asking this question is because my dad said that he looked just like me when he was a kid. My height and weight and all. And today he is about 5 foot 9 inches and like 200 pounds. Shouldn't have mentioned that, but oh well. He isn't FAT, but I wanna be like I am now when I'm older.

There is something that I can do now and all through my life so I can stay fit and just the right weight?

I think that is it. Thanks SiM!

Well, I used to be skinny as a teenager, but am now 5'10" at 266lb.

I was never sporty or muscular, but but quite skinny.

Not found anybody who could tell you how to make time stand still.  All the people who claim to have the answers never seem to be able to get it right.

Ofcourse, it is easy to argue you should balance energy intake with energy output; but even that never seems to work right.

From my own perspective, one life style factor I find has a significant impact on my weight is stress; but how do you have a life without stress?  The problem is that by the time you get older, a lot of life style choices are restricted by the amount of time you have, and all the other things going on in your life.

The best way is just to keep fit and active like me  ;Di'm 43 5ft 7inches and weigh 10st and have a very little body fat with a decent ammount of muscle.
If you go overboard by pushing lots of weights at some stage you will get bored and stop and and slowly but surely some of the muscle will turn to fat a lot of fat.

So looks like. Take maybe 30 minutes in the morning and night to take a jog, lift a little bit, and other things like that. Instead of coming home and sitting in the Lazeboy with a bag of chips and a bowl of ice cream watching television for 2 hours. Then going stright to bed. That could defiently fit into my "thought out" life.

30 minutes morning and night is 1 hour per day.

Look at how your father lives.  Does he have 1 hour each day to spend on that.  If he does not, then will you have at his age.

Also, while lifting may add muscle (most of which will turn into fat the moment you stop doing it - which is why you have to be careful about not doing more than you can continue with), the aerobic stuff like jogging is better for burning energy (although if you overdo this, it could damage your joints - but you did not ask about your joints, only your waistline).

Also, I would guess that a proper warm down is also critical, so I am not sure if going to bed right after exercising is the best thing.

What evidence there is, as far as I can see, is that having a constantly active lifestyle (i.e. doing a job that requires you are constantly on the move) has more impact than trying to do short periods of intensive exercise.  Unfortunately, many of us simply don't have those active types of jobs.
