Does A Cloud Add Extra Weight To My Head ?
« on: 27/08/2007 21:21:13 »
Dear Cloudsters,

I luff clouds !..they are my all time favourite cloudy type cotton wool floaty things!

Here's one.

Quite a babe eh ?

Does this cloud add more weight (air pressure)to my head when it passes by above me ?

I think I know but my reasoning is a clouded issue !! *le groan*

I think, in term of barametric pressure, it will be lower.

Lower ?..oh my giddy aunt !!

Does this not correspond with what you thought, Neil?

Remember i could always be wrong. My reasoning is that when we have low air pressure, this causes the air to rise, cool and condense out moisture, which forms clouds and precipitation. Since a rising column of air above weighs less, the barometric pressure falls.

Chum.....I'm no meteorological expert and my response was not one of exasperation !!...hang on...yes it was !!...y'see..I was coming from the angle that clouds are big fluffy things and must weigh more than air void of cloudy stuff...but NOW that you explain it the way you do I can see that there is sense in what you say..............which is nice !!...LOL.

yaaay, i made sense!

Seeing as it's 17ish years since i studied meterology, and even then a lot failed to sink in, i will have another go.

The above discription of how clouds form is just one way, but i am guessing you do not live near any mountains. Although i have seen that iceberg in your birdbath.

If i am right. then your thinking is that the cloud, in some way, will affect the barometric pressure below it.

Well, those clouds in the picture look like cumulas clouds (fluffy, cotton woll type). These are formed by convection, aslo, this type of cloud only lasts about 15 minutes or so. So i dont think it would have time to affect the air pressue below.

making sense is one thing...being right is another, i am happy with 1 out of 2.
