My 23 y.o. daughter has recently, "officially" been diagnosed with Tourettes Syndrome. She's had facial and vocal tics since she was 11.  The doctors said it was a simple tic disorder and she didn't need to be medicated.  Over the last year, the symptoms have gotten much worse, and now she has even more, which include her hands going into spasms and eye blinking.  Since the blinking has started, she says she has bubbles in her eyes, on the outer corners under the top and bottom lids.  It drives her a bit mad.  She has seen the doctor, but he can't find anything wrong.   I thought maybe it was a side effect of the  Risperidone they've prescribed her, but she says its been going on since before she started taking it. 

Any clue what could be causing this and how she can stop it?

Geek Speak / Why doesn't my mouse scroll?

Out of the blue my mouse has stopped scrolling up and down.  The only way I can go up and down on a page is to use the little up & down thingy to the right of my screen.  My mouse has done this once or twice and then just started back, so I'm wondering if maybe I accidentally clicked on something that caused this to happen.  I'm lazy and don't want to be bothered with the up and down thingy to the right of my screen.  Help!!!  What can I do to make my mouse work again.

General Science / Is it safe to take a shower during a thunderstorm?

Nic and I are having a disagreement on this.  I say it's dangerous to take a shower during a thunderstorm, Nic says I'm being silly and that you can't get struck by lightening while showering. 

Can someone tell me whose right & why?

Physiology & Medicine / Can I get rid of a kidney infection without antibiotics?

I woke up this morning with what I'm pretty sure is a kidney infection.  I don't think I have a fever.  I feel a constant urge to urinate, but produce very little and it's painful.  There has been a little blood in it.

I know I should go to the doctor, but it's Sunday and they aren't open today or tomorrow.  The only other option is the emergency room, and the nearest one is two hours away.

I'm trying to drink plenty of water and cranapple juice (I hate cranberry).  Is there anything I can do to flush this out of me?

My friend John got the flu about a month ago.  It's finally started clearing up except for the chest congestion.  He went to the doctor earlier this week and they did an xray, which showed a mass in his lower lobe of his lung.  The doctors believe its an infection and have scheduled a biopsy for Monday.  I've never heard of doing a biopsy for an infection, but he said they want to see what type of infection it is so they can determine the best antibiotics to use on him.  He said they have to grow it first and then test the antibiotics on it. 

He's a little anxious as he had a trip to Vegas scheduled this weekend that they've told him to cancel because they don't want him flying because of the possibility of an embolism.  He also has another trip planned in a month and he's worried he won't be able to make that one either.

How long does it take to grow an infection and test antibiotics on it and how serious is this condition?

My fear of birds seems to be getting worse.  Last week while driving to an out of town class, I drove by a very grassy area where there were hundreds of birds hiding in the grass.  They flew up and surrounded my car.  I was so frightened I nearly ran off the road.  That same day I stopped at a convenience store and when I came out, my car was again surrounded by dozens of little birds just walking around on the ground.  I was nearly paralyzed by fear.  I couldn't get in the car.  I thought about tossing something on the ground to scare them off, but couldn't do it cos I thought they would attack me.  When another car pulled up and they flew away...in my direction....I nearly came unglued.

For as long as I can remember I've been somewhat fearful, but it hasn't held me back.  The last few years have gotten much worse.  It's becoming somewhat debilitating.

Is there hope for me?  Is it really possible to overcome fear?

Two years ago I read several articles that said caffeine slowed down weight loss, so I gave it up and with diet and lots of exercise I lost a significant amount of weight.

Now I'm seeing lots af articles that say caffeine speeds up weight loss.


Which is it?  Does it help or hinder weight loss?

I know this sounds silly...but it's really happening.

The last few days, several times a day, my right breast feels like it's vibrating.

Usually when I'm at home or in the car with the music turned up loud, I can't hear my cell phone ring, so I switch it to vibrate and clip it to the inside of my bra on the left side so I won't miss a call or text.  The vibrating I'm feeling in my right breast feels exactly like it feels when my cell phone vibrates.

I have not clipped my cell phone to my bra since this started happening.


Does anyone have any idea what this is all about?

Last week I took a class to prep me for a big state exam I have to take for our state license in air conditioning.  The following is one of the questions the instructor said would probably be on my exam, but he didn't give the answer and I can't find it in any of the 25 friggin reference books I have.  I'm sure it's probably a simple answer but I have a headache and quite frankly I'm tired of looking for it.  HELP!

The heat required to change liquid to a vapor is called _____________.

Would also like to know how much heat is required.

The correct answer will be greatly appreciated.

Geek Speak / Why is my computer opening dozens of windows?

I'm staying with a friend in South Florida right now and wireless internet isn't available.  I'm using my cell phone as a modem and the connection is very slow.  I've made a few posts tonight, but when I hit submit, my screen goes blank and doesn't display the page. I open in tabs, so when it did this I went to the other tab and came back to TNS.  When I try to close out the first tab, dozens and dozens and dozens of windows open up and I can't stop it.  This has happened 3 times tonight. 

It did this at home a few times and Nicholas stopped it for me.  I thought he hit alt F4, but I can't remember.  Why is it doing this and how can I stop it?

Do they?  I've heard some people say that their eyes change color according to their mood or what they were wearing. 

I have blue eyes but when I wear green, my eyes do appear to change colors.  Tonight I was wearing a green blouse and my husband asked me if I had on green contacts.

Can they change color and if not what makes them look like they have?

My daughter had facial & vocal tics starting around age 12.  Occasionally her head would jerk somewhat violently.  The tics lasted all throughout junior high and high school.  The doctor said she had Transient Tic Disorder and would eventually outgrow it.  It seemed to get much better after she graduated from high school.

She's 20 now and the last 2 times she's come home from college to visit I've noticed the facial tics have returned and are worse than ever.  Her right eye blinks uncontrollably for a few seconds and then her head jerks slightly.  This happens frequently, several times a day.  So far I haven't noticed any vocal tics.

There is no family history of Tourrettes or any other tic disorder, although my niece (my brothers daughter) also had facial tics for a few years but she seems to have outgrown hers.

We're trying to get her in to see a specialist but it's taking forever and although I'm trying to convince her there's nothing to worry about, I'm worried sick.  I'm rapidly running out of patience waiting on the doctors!

Could Transient Tic Disorder still be going on after 8 years or does this sound like Tourrettes or possibly another tic disorder not as serious?

Nic and I were having a discussion tonight about sex, condoms, & std's.  I (half) jokingly said to him that when the time was right and he decided he was 'ready' to always wear a condom, "in fact", I said "wear two of them". 

Nic said he heard that wearing two condoms increased the chance of breakage.  I had never heard that before.  Is there any truth to it?

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Will neutering my dog calm him down?

Benji is a little mentally challenged.  He's agressive, bites and hikes everywhere!  Last night, I let him out and my 13 pound dog decided to go after a 400 pound black bear.  I walked outside to see why he was barking and he was trying desperately to get to an enormous black bear.  Fortunately there was a fence separating them and I was able to snatch him up before the bear destroyed the fence and had Benjamin as an appetizer.  We have to keep him under lock and key, otherwise he will try to attack much larger animals.  He's been nearly eaten twice by much larger dogs, and has cost me a small fortune in veterinary bills.

He has an appointment Tuesday to be neutered.  Will this calm him down, make him less aggressive, stop his hiking and generally make him a little more intelligent.....or is this just wishful thinking on my part?
