Geek Speak / DVD Burning software
« on: 03/07/2008 11:45:31 »
What software do you use to burn your DVDs?

I've reformatted my computer because I had loads of adware from downloading programmes with hidden baddies inside lol. I used to use Nero but the new versions of it are horrible, and they are the ones mostly about. But aswel as that, they come with programmes that just take up memory and never get used anyway.

So if anybody knows of any programme to burn video files (.avi .mpg etc) to DVD so that they will play in most DVD players, with an easy to use interface that is preferably free, please help me out and tell me one!
Thanks !  [:D]

General Science / Why are people holding back science?
« on: 13/06/2008 01:39:16 »
This is more of a debate than actual science... I'm not sure if this is in the right part of the forum but I'll say anyway..
After reading comments on youtube about creationism over evolution, and how the same people who believe in creationism think that tinkering with DNA is playing god, will we ever make real physical changes in ourselves?
On TV the other day, there was a biologist who had found the gene in a worm that was related to age. She turned off the gene and the worm lived alot longer, and was alot more active than they usually would be. The equivalent if it was done in humans is we would lead a long active life upto the age of 1000.
But how would this kind of thing ever be released to the public?
Moral grounds are holding us back, because a volunteer would probably be found, if enough money was offered to them, or to their family if anything was to wrong. But it's like all the controversy over cloning.
If people are so against this, then doesn't that put a real time limit on our own species (the suns burning time). Because we'll never be able to reach other planets and colonise them with different atmospheres if we can't alter ourselves to be able to deal with them. This seems to not be the way alot of people are thinking these days so what are your opinions on this subject?

Just Chat! / The film contact
« on: 06/06/2008 13:41:21 »
OMG! what a film!!! The storyline is just one of the best storylines in any film! If you haven't seen it you really do need to!
Without spoiling it, women who studys the stars and listens to space for any noises from near stars that aliens could have possibly made. An she gets alot more than she bargained for  [:D]

Does anybody know any other science films that are like this, with just such a great storyline?

Muchas Gracias

Physiology & Medicine / To get the most strength from lifting weights
« on: 27/04/2008 17:02:33 »
Is it true that if you lift weights before you eat anything at all, the muscles grow stronger? Because their is less starch (sugars) in the muscles and more of the strong stuff lol

Rocky Marciano (a heavyweight boxer only standing about 5'10) used to wake up, weight lift and do his road work and sparring and other training before eating one massive meal a day, then resting for the rest of it to let it digest. Apparently thats what made him so strong (he never lost)

But I'm just asking you all what you think the best time of day to pump iron is, and if that really does work better?! Thanks.
