Title: fusion deuterium and tritium
Post by: jaiii on 30/08/2012 21:56:40
Hello

What are the reactions in nuclear fusion of deuterium and tritium?

Thank you.

The obvious reaction would be H-2 + H-3 --> He-4 + n-1, and that would certainly be one possibility. I think that there might be a catalysed mechanism, though, that would require less activation energy than that direct reaction.

Here is a diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fusion#Overview

A table of possible hydrogen fusion reactions is shown here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fusion#Criteria_and_candidates_for_terrestrial_reactions

The same article also talks about muon-catalysed fusion, but muons are an expensive catalyst which decays rapidly.
