Doctors rarely prescribe it to patients for pain (in the US), instead opting for hydrocodone or oxycodone, medical marijuana, etc,.

Opiate withdrawal is nasty.
Barbiturate withdrawal can kill you.
You need to start with this.

I'm not sure I understand all of the draw of the opiates.  But, one thing that occurs is rebound pain. 

So you take them to get rid of pain, and when you stop taking them, you get rebound pain.  Making a person think they have chronic pain, and still need the opiates. 

But, it may be that the pain has long before been resolved, or it should have been resolved.
