General Science / Re: Which is the more common, right - or left-brain dominance?
« on: 12/10/2009 16:22:29 »
Most people are right-handed, right?
So, i think, for most people, the left side of the brain is more active
"Each hemisphere of the brain interacts primarily with one half of the body, but for reasons that are unclear, the connections are crossed: the left side of the brain interacts with the right side of the body, and vice versa. Motor connections from the brain to the spinal cord, and sensory connections from the spinal cord to the brain, both cross the midline at brainstem levels."

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / What happens to the volume of a gas at absolute zero?
« on: 08/10/2009 03:06:11 »
I don't think it is possible to reach this temperature.
Even every corner of the space has been touched by photons/EM waves.
Probably the only place where photons haven't come in contact with is where space haven't exists yet.
But, the place where space didn't exists cannot exists, because nothing exists in nothingness. Therefore, absolute zero is never possible!

Chemistry / Is fluoride in drinking water safe?
« on: 02/10/2009 01:32:48 »
Get ready for a conspiracy theory;
Fluoride was used in Nazi's Concentration camps. It was said that prisoners who take Fluoride will be easier to handle.
http://www.infonews.co.nz/news.cfm?l=1&t=0&id=17791
There are lots of concern about Fluoride. Many people actually believe there are adverse effect using it. But knowing politicians, well... Fluoridation has been done years ago, and no one really bother to rechecked it now.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Re: Does an electric eel shock itself?
« on: 17/09/2009 18:21:25 »
"Researchers at Yale University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), applying modern engineering design tools to one of the basic units of life, argue that artificial cells could be built that not only replicate the electrical behavior of electric eel cells but in fact improve on them. Artificial versions of the eel's electricity generating cells could be developed as a power source for medical implants and other tiny devices" - Wikipedia

« on: 17/09/2009 16:28:33 »
I would be careful answering this question, because there are much stuff we don't know about cancer. So, I'm going to offer you some of my thoughts.
Angiogenesis is one of the main factor that made it is possible for a cancer to grow so much. Otherwise, tumors will stay dormant.
"Angiogenesis is a physiological process involving the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels." - Wikipedia
Sprouting angiogenesis;
"First, biological signals known as angiogenic growth factors activate receptors present on endothelial cells present in pre-existing blood vessels. Second, the activated endothelial cells begin to release enzymes called proteases that degrade the basement membrane in order to allow endothelial cells to escape from the original (parent) vessel walls. The endothelial cells then proliferate into the surrounding matrix and form solid sprouts connecting neighboring vessels. As sprouts extend toward the source of the angiogenic stimulus, endothelial cells migrate in tandem, using adhesion molecules, the equivalent of cellular grappling hooks, called integrins. These sprouts then form loops to become a full-fledged vessel lumen as cells migrate to the site of angiogenesis. Sprouting occurs at a rate of several millimeters per day, and enables new vessels to grow across gaps in the vasculature. " - Wikipedia
This process is suppose to be vital for our self-repairing mechanism, where new blood vessels should regenerate to supply more blood, especially in cases of injuries where blood vessels was cut.
There was an experiment done by planting cancer cells into an eye of a rabbit. Lo and behold, blood vessels started to sprout and rejuvenate the cancer cells in the cornea.
Regarding to the question being asked, if we wipe out this mechanism, probably we will tamper our self-repair ability to some degree.
Now, there are probably more ways and reasons why cancer cells grows so fast, but angiogenesis was one of the most important mechanism which made it possible.

The Environment / Why do clouds maintain their form rather than swirling around?
« on: 15/09/2009 05:39:12 »Ok, this I will accept, thank you for your answer SkepticSam. Clouds do change but, you have to observe them for some time to see this. My revised question, hence, is Why aren't clouds stirred around and mixed up as much as I think they should be, by fast winds and the turmoil of micro wind systems? You know what I mean.
I think,
At higher altitudes, I believe that the wind is much more uniformed, compared to the ground. Therefore, the clouds won't scatter much.

Hi there,
What will happen to water seeping through the soil? I know there are rivers and tunnels underground, but is there any chance water going deeper than that? What will happen to it?

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Why is natural selection so much slower than human-led selection?
« on: 10/09/2009 17:37:12 »
I think the next generation evolution is probably based on technology that humans have today.
This is my idea of universe evolution;
The big bang was the precursor of all.
Next, the sub atomic particles of big bang formed gas clouds and evolved into galaxies, star systems and solar systems.
Next, some solar systems through it's chemical reactions created simple life forms.
Next, these life forms eventually became the granddaddy of intelligent life forms.
Intelligence life forms will evolve into what?
The way I see things are going, probably the next evolution will happen in technology, namely computers. Better and superior AI developed will probably get merged into our organic/biological system. Soon, when we consumed all the biological resources and the earth cannot cope with the endless need of each individuals, probably we have to rethink the way we live.
Since the reality which we are living each moment is merely electrical impulses going in and out of our brain, probably things like "The Matrix" will become a reality.
Just a thought, just a thought...

General Science / Why can't we use the earth's rotation to travel?
« on: 09/09/2009 15:33:43 »
Momentum...
While we are standing on the earth's surface, we have the same velocity as the earth does, even if we don't feel it.
The momentum is still being conserved event if we float like a balloon.
If the earth suddenly stop rotating, you'll feel like being inside a car when the emergency break is applied.

New Theories / Re: The fossil of people is found together with dinosaurs
« on: 08/09/2009 13:43:05 »
This could probably be the discussion being done by the Creationist Museum.
Because they says that the earth is only thousand years old, and therefore dinosaurs must co-exists with human beings.

Physiology & Medicine / Can we put our trust in big pharma?
« on: 04/09/2009 13:16:17 »
We are being lead to believe that there are much more disorders that people have, and they should take more drugs.
Pharma today are trying to get us to take drug as soon as possible. Ritalin is just one of the major example how this was done in our schools. Who knows what will happen to these kids in longer term.
Go Google "Generation RX", and you'll find out more things you've been missing.
