Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / A reported object travelling faster than the speed of light?
« on: 26/11/2019 15:59:14 »
Stuart got in contact with us to ask a question:
I saw on space.com they reported an object travelling faster than light, apparently it was a star that had been ejected, how is this possible? Doesn't the mass of the object become massive according to general relativity?
Do you know the answer?

Chemistry / Could CO2 be heavier than H20 in different conditions?
« on: 25/11/2019 15:27:12 »
William got in touch to ask:
Water apparently is only heavier that CO2 because of polar attraction. But can you conceive of a planet where conditions are so different that the situation could be reversed  -  a sea of liquid CO2 and a sky of H2O above?
Do you know the answer?

General Science / Are man-made things the nemesis of nature?
« on: 25/11/2019 15:21:51 »
David wrote to us with a question:
Is the human made concept of MONEY (unnatural) mother nature's (planet Earth's) NEMESIS?
What do you think?

Physiology & Medicine / Is there a connection between our emotional state and our immune system?
« on: 22/11/2019 12:01:57 »
Francesca reached out with a question:
Is there any scientific evidence of connection between people's emotional state and illnesses such as cancer or immune system problems?
Do you know the answer?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / How much fuel would we need to get to Mars?
« on: 22/11/2019 11:55:53 »
Daniel wrote to us to ask us this:
If the same amount of fuel that is used to get a rocket to the moon from the earth, is used on a rocket that is launched from the moon, would the rocket make the journey to Mars?
What do you think?

Physiology & Medicine / Can we get all the nutrition we need from plants only?
« on: 22/11/2019 11:37:13 »
Max got in contact with us to ask this question:
Can a person stop eating meat altogether and get all nutritional benefit from plants only?
Can you help?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / How can Mars' sunset be blue?
« on: 22/11/2019 11:30:11 »
We received this question through our mailbox, and we need your help:
I understand that daytime color of Mars is red and sunrise and sunsets are blue. Also Mars atmosphere is filled with iron oxide dust which is an efficient absorber of blue light scattering red light making day time red. How can sunset be blue when all the blue is absorbed by the iron oxide dust?
Do you know the answer?

Physiology & Medicine / Do we yawn while asleep?
« on: 14/11/2019 14:23:55 »
Melyssa has asked us:
I’ve read that we yawn to help provide more oxygen to the brain. So I’ve wondered; it is possible to yawn while fully asleep?
What do you think?

Physiology & Medicine / Would different sperm produce different-looking children?
« on: 14/11/2019 13:05:39 »
Justin got in touch with us to ask the following:
Would my son look different if a different sperm had fertilised the same egg when he was conceived?
What do you think?

Chemistry / Can we displace a more reactive metal in a salt with a less reactive metal?
« on: 14/11/2019 12:04:26 »
Olivier wrote to us to ask the following:
Is it possible to displace a more reactive metal in a salt with a less reactive metal? For example:

 KCl + Na → NaCl + K

Do you know the answer?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Why does a larger surface of water evaporate quicker?
« on: 14/11/2019 11:59:16 »
Ema sent us another interesting question:
I recently spilt some water on the floor. The water was at room temperature, and the floor was wooden, so I guess not much colder or warmer than the air. The bigger the surface over which it spread, the quicker it evaporated, but why?
Can you help?

Physiology & Medicine / Why are some people afraid of heights?
« on: 14/11/2019 11:54:58 »
Ema worte to us with an interesting question:
Why do some of us experience fear of heights? And what happens in the brain when it happens?
Do you know the answer?

Physiology & Medicine / What causes hand tremors?
« on: 14/11/2019 09:44:44 »
Josh sent us an interesting question:
Why is it that when you try to keep your hands still they go all shaky?
Can you help?

Chemistry / Can metalloids form ions?
« on: 14/11/2019 09:37:05 »
Xarely wrote to us with a question:
Do metalloids form ions? If not what charges do they form?
Do you know the answer?

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / How do dolphins and whales breathe when asleep?
« on: 08/11/2019 12:20:43 »
David got in contact to send us an interesting question:
If whales and dolphins need to go to the surface of the water to breathe, my question is : How do they manage to achieve going to the surface to breathe whilst they are sleeping? Are they sub-consciously aware of their environment, thus automatically going to the surface to breathe?
Do you know the answer?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / What makes objects transparent or opaque?
« on: 08/11/2019 12:05:45 »
Charlie got in contact with us to ask a good question:
Since everything is made up of electrons, neutrons and protons, why are some things transparent (like glass) and other things completely opaque?
Do you know the answer?

The Environment / Do plastics in the ocean contribute to global warming?
« on: 08/11/2019 12:01:05 »
Angela wrote to us to understand global warming better:
Are plastics in our oceans speeding up global warming, given that they are quite good at insulating?
Can you help?

The Environment / How much does human heat contribute to global warming?
« on: 08/11/2019 11:58:43 »
Angela sent us a very good question:
As humans continue to overpopulate the planet, does the heat that they generate contribute to global warming? Imagine a compost bin getting hot... it’s just like we’re the bacteria and the earth is the compost bin! If humans do contribute, what %age of blame would we be awarded to us in comparison to, say, cars?
Do you know the answer?

General Science / Is there any truth to the Solfeggio frequency scale?
« on: 08/11/2019 11:43:48 »
Justin wrote to us to know more about this:
Is there any truth in this Solfeggio scale thing that I read about? Some frequency like 528 can make you go from sad to happy or is this whole thing more like hypnosis?
Can you help?

« on: 08/11/2019 11:34:51 »
Jacqueline reached out with an interesting question:
I am a waitress and I never write anything down and I can easily memorize everyones order, why is this?
