Hi Everybody.

I just witnessed something I've seen and experienced many mnay times before. My daughter crying her eyes out in an emotion that would befit a trauma and then, a spontaneous change to a laugh and a giggle.

Seems there's no gap between the two emotions.

 Then I thought that the tears produced are characteristic of joy, and sorrow and therefore ,the two emotions , (albeit at the opposite end of the spectrum) seem to have the same mechanical effect to produce tears.

Presumably the two emotions must trigger the same brain circuits and muscles eh ?  why is this, that tears that are normally associated with sorrow, are just as easily created with joy ?

And why cry anyway ?

I don't know the answer, but after 14 years being dormant I hope my revival of this topic will bring in some answers from the others.

Speaking of laughing and crying, I remember when I was an edgy young adult, one of my catchphrases was "I want to laugh at myself so much to the point I am shedding tears so that other people won't know that I am actually crying".

Boy I hear that and have been there done that.. and sometimes even as an adult,  I'll be laughing about something, and all of a sudden feel that wave of joy leave, followed by a memory of something horrible that takes over, bring me to tears. Something in that joy triggers a stored memory of something not quite so joyful.

Ah, locked memory. Back then I didn't believe such things exist, but when I tried to recall a traumatic experience I was wondering myself why that particular memory got locked for so many years already.
