I have played around with a virtual reality system to deal with phobias. In one system a person was able to explore high places. In another set up the person was able to watch snakes. The interaction with the snakes went from seeing one in a glass case to the intense mode in which you were strolling through high grass seeing snakes appear here and there near you. I know VR has been used for arachnophobia and for war veterans. VR is often augmented with props such as feeling a toy spider touch your skin while watching on in the VR.
