What is the function of "junk" DNA?

'Junk DNA', portions of your genome which appear to have no specific purpose, may not be useless after all.

A team of scientists has identified patterns in both the junk areas of the genome and those which coded for proteins. Could these parts of the genome have a function after all?

In molecular biology, junk DNA is a provisional label for the portions of the DNA sequence of a chromosome or a genome for which no function has been identified. These parts of the genomemay have a function but at the present time it is unknown.
