As soon as it's written, I should imagine.

I suspect the testing is more of an issue than the writing.

Um. So if I went out and bought a Vista laptop (Home Premium) and then they come out with SP1 would I get a free upgrade or would I just be screwed and have a peice of junk system for the next how many year?

Testing? This is Microsoft we're talking about! (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Flol%2F7.gif&hash=dea57c517c85d397d2631b4aa1aa6fe7)

Service packs are a free download.  If you have the base operating system, then you can (and should) regularly be updating with any patches available from Microsoft from their website, and this will bring down Service Packs when they become available.

Ofcourse, whether you want to use Vista at all before SP1 arrives is another matter (after all, the reason why people are so eagerly awaiting SP1 is because there are many question marks about the usability of Vista in its present form - but if it works for you, then why the panic about SP1, if it doesn't work, then would you want it?).

I've been thinking about buying a laptop but I DO NOT WANT VISTA. You would not believe the trouble I'm having locating 1. It's easy enough to find a desktop PC without it, but a laptop? uh-uh.

XP is preferable to Vista, but I want to load it with Linux. I don't want to put money in Bill Gates' pocket for a product I'll never use.

You have to bear in mind that Eth is in the UK, which is a different market to the US.

On the other hand, Dabs (http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?&NavigationKey=11105&NavigationKey=50220000&NavigationKey=46460000&CategorySelectedId=11105&PageMode=1) lists 79 laptops with XP loaded.

Asus, Gateway 2000, Intel, Sager, Chem USA, and IBM's are all available without an OS. There are other Laptops listed in the link I sent by PM.

I thought Gateway is now defunct.

IBM has sold out to Lenovo.

defunct = gone, expired, passed away, no longer existing.

From the Latin defunctus; meaning discharged, dead.

OK, back in 2001 Gateway substantially downsized, and as far as I can tell pulled out of all non-US markets (which is why I thought they had gone down altogether).

As of August 2007, Gateway is now owned by Acer.

The original Gateway (based in Ireland) went bankrupt, I believe, and was bought by Acer very cheaply. Gateway did not have a very good reputation for service, support, or even delivering on time, and they may well have been some of the causes of their demise.

Thanks for that History Lesson. I still love gateway though.

Acer has a very good reputation here in the US - all of the best high-speed graphicks cards are mostly Acer. - but ya know  ????

Perhaps check out the reviews for the Acre notebooks.

Gateway here in the US is a company started in the Midwest. I have used one and so has my former partner. He is a geophysicist and uses only a laptop to do geophysical processing - (Fourier Transforms, etc.) He loves his Gateway.

I have used Acer in the past (1994), and was very happy with it, but that was a long time ago.

Worked for a company that used Gateways in the mid to late 1990s, and they were terrible.

All of this was a decade or more ago, so I cannot say where either company is today.

I don't want a notebook. I want a laptop so I can do development work in the garden, or in the middle of a field if I so choose.

I don't need super-whizzo graphics. I don't even need a sound card. It doesn't have to be Wi-Fi. So long as it's quick, has around 100Gb harddrive, 2Gb memory and a couple of USB ports, I'll be happy. Oh, and it has to be able to take a mouse. I hate those touch-sensitive pads.

The terms are often used interchangeably (although originally I think there was a criteria that a notebook should be scarcely larger than an A$ pad in area, and a laptop could be somewhat larger, but these days, I think the distinction has largely vanished).

Ofcourse, if it is an Acre notebook, it could be the size of a field [;D]

Not sure on what you are going to roll a mouse over when in the garden, or in the middle of a field (don't think a picnic rug works as a surface to roll a mouse over).  I personally like trackballs (not the mini ones, but full sized ones) - then you don't worry about a surface to roll them over (which, on my cluttered desk, there is nothing free to roll over anyway).

I've got this revolutionary device. It's called a mousepad  [:D]
