Title: Why Does It Feel Better To Hold A Bag In My Right Hand When Walking ?
Post by: neilep on 01/10/2009 21:49:49
Dearest Bagologists,

As a sheepy I of course enjoy holding bags. There's nothing more I like to do in the mornings than to jump out of bed and seize the nearest bag and hold it.

Out of all the holding bag moments I have ever had (and there have been many...even more than 5 !!).......the one I liked best was one that happened today...but this was cancelled out when I had to change the bag to my other hand !!...Oh boy !!..was that a bad holding bag moment !!.... [:(!]

Here, see what I mean ?

Non-Enjoyable Bag Holding Moment

Could this be related a right and left handed thing ?...this then got me wondering if it's more than right and left handiness but left and right bodiness ?!!!....
..it's not as if I was eating with that hand or writing...just holding a bag !!

I would very much welcome an explanation before a new neurosis kicks in !...There may come a time soon when I need to hold a bag in my other hand and it would be of some comfort to know why it makes me feel uneasy !!...In the mean time I will avoid at all costs holding bags in my left hand !!

Dear Mr Neil,

You have obviously developed a bad case of sinisteritus. A surprising number of people are afflicted by this condition.

My tribe clinic has been conducting a lot of research in this field and I am pleased to say that we have developed a treatment! The treatment consists of coating your left arm, up to the elbow, with our special hot poultice. The hot poultice must be kept on your arm for at least six hours every day.

Please provide your credit card number and we will ship you a 50 kg container of the poultice for a mere $699.99 by return. This should be sufficient for one week of treatment. (The entire course usually takes a minimum 3 months)

"Doc" Geezer, have you considered offering treatments for arachibutyrophobia (http://www.phobia-fear-release.com/arachibutyrophobia.html)

Apparently a lot of money in it in the USA ...

Re original question "left and right bodiness ?"

There is a phenomenon which can occur in brain damaged individuals called Hemineglect (http://www.scholarpedia.org/article/Hemineglect) where they do not recognise one side of their body, and are unaware of this deficiency, e.g. will shave one half of their face and do not realise the other half is unshaven.

In some cases they do not accept the limbs on one side of their body belong to them ...

Quote
Patients may say things like, “I don’t know whose hand that is, but they’d better get my ring off!”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemispatial_neglect#Varieties_of_hemispatial_neglect

So Hemineglect would be the most extreme form of "left / right bodiness".

I really thought you were pulling my plonka. But you weren't, its not a spoof.

I have a proposal for you. Can we get together to discuss a system, similar to the peanut butter one, for the fear of belly button fluff. I feel sure we can make an absolute fortune.

Dearest Mr Geezer,

I thank ewe very much for your kind attention in this matter and am humbled by the generosity of your kind offer to relieve me of some of my fiscal reservoir. Were I drowning in said reservoir it would please me to great lengths to supply ewe with all the card details that ewe require that would enable the fruition of such a noble transaction.

It is with deep regret that at this moment I find myself not wading  but merely paddling in the trickle of my monetary stream and thus have a proposal for ewe which I feel will benefit both of us.

As ewe are no doubt aware the holding of a bag is my new found hobby and I see no reason why I should not be leapfrogged up to such a status that would lead to my receiving free treatment via your good selves , plus a complimentary monthly fee of $3000 dollars for my sheepy endorsement or, and this is my favoured option, that I be invited via first class service to attend your clinic for free live-in trials for a year of two due to the archetypal nature of my unique condition. Ewe do have a penthouse for my family  yes ?...good !.......The endorsement fee still is obligatory of course !

yes..yes..I can see how this will be of benefit to us both.

Dearest Sheepy Indiviual,

The Elders met and decided it would be best that you do not come to the reservation clinic at this time. It has been a very poor year for hunting, and the stocks of food are sadly depleted. The Elders think there is some risk that you might, er well, replenish the stock.

We appreciate your situation, and have decided to make a course of treatment available to you for five quid.

Regards, "Doc"

PS - Did you know that "vegetarian" is an old native American word for "lousy hunter".

I don't think the person with a fear of whales need worry too much. I can't remember the last time I saw one swimming down Oxford St.

I wonder if ayone has a fear of breathing? (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Ffainting%2F1.gif&hash=9f679325d51a2a8410934e5499e6100e)

Oh dear! I should not have followed that link.

It reminded me that I can't stand cellophane. The yellow stuff they used to put on Lucozade bottles was particulary bad. I think it's the sound it makes. Just the thought of it makes me cringe. Touching it is a real challenge.

Very interesting thread.

Holding a bag is a complex movement which requires careful coordination of your brain and eye. People who study the brain in detail refer to this as 'vision for action'.

The problem you describe for the brain is to coordinate the muscles in whichever arm you choose, ranging from your shoulder to your hand, and to pick up the bag with the correct grip and force. This is actually quite difficult!

Sure that we do have built-in brain side preferences. However, I think that this problem you describe is more to do with the finding that the left side of the brain is heavily involved in the coordination of the action, whereas the right side of the brain is to do the 'target approach' itself.

However, which bag you prefer is likely to be most related to your handedness (right handed people have left brain dominance etc.)

Whilst this may seem like an interesting 'tea-time' question, it is of course of vital importance in re-training patients who have tragically had a stroke. More training can lead to better performance, thankfully. In other words, you can successfully learn to use the opposite side (i.e. if you have a stroke in the left side of the movement parts of the brain, you will have weakness on the other side).

For people interested in the neuroscience itself, please see  www.symon.bham.ac.uk/publications/.../www_ch05_www_proofs.pdf

thanks

You have nothing to fear but fear itself.
