What do you mean by "engraved"? Are you referring to "engrams", which are the neurological correlate of a stored memory?

By engraving I mean encoded. Not sure about engrams.

Nobody really knows how memory is stored. We know that some types of memory are stored in the hippocampus, but other types of memory are stored in different parts of the brain.

Biologists are dissecting the brains of various creatures in microscopic detail, and analysing the connectivity of every cell to try and spot patterns.

There are several large projects to emulate (parts of) a brain in a computer, which might model the behavior of these cells.
