Just Chat! / Fate is strange, no?
« on: 30/06/2009 10:16:46 »
it's amazing what could happen in a scant six months.

it doesn't seem so long ago that I was a devout christian and a strong supporter of the religion through science. Then certian life events occur, changing my point of view significantly enough that it causes me to drop myself out of the faith. If somebody had told me this would happen, I would have simply scoffed at them and told them it was impossible. It's amazing how wrong one can be.

nowadays I find myself concentrating on certain... other aspects of life  [;)]

all jokes aside, as I see it now, I believe it's the best decision i've made in a long time... Though I do think i'll keep this particular decision from my mother; I don't want to worry her dear heart.

Just thought some of you who may have been annoyed by my past stubborn refusals to use logic rather than create it would appreciate this tiny little confession  [:)]

Just Chat! / hello again!
« on: 02/04/2009 01:10:07 »
well, I've been busy again, and the forum always seems to slip my memory in the face of all the business...

but I remembered its existence just now, if only for the purpose of asking this question...

I ran into a symbol, and I want to know if any of you recognise it, and where it might be from.

this is the image:

other than that... i'll probably be back for a while until my life gets over-busy again [;D]

Just Chat! / Funny Stuff!
« on: 15/01/2009 16:50:06 »
I was browsing another forum, and I came across a really long signature.  I'm sure the only reason it's allowed to exist is because of how funny it is.  These are the contents:

1. SAVE THE WHALES. COLLECT THE WHOLE SET.
2. A DAY WITHOUT SUNSHINE IS LIKE, NIGHT.
3. ON THE OTHER HAND, YOU HAVE DIFFERENT FINGERS.
4. I JUST GOT LOST IN THOUGHT. IT WASN'T FAMILIAR TERRITORY.
5. 42.7% OF ALL STATISTICS ARE MADE UP ON THE SPOT.
6. 99% OF LAWYERS GIVE THE REST A BAD NAME.
7. I FEEL LIKE I'M DIAGONALLY PARKED IN A PARALLEL UNIVERSE.
8. HONK IF YOU LOVE PEACE AND QUIET.
9. REMEMBER, HALF THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW ARE BELOW AVERAGE.
10. HE WHO LAUGHS LAST THINKS SLOWEST.
11. DEPRESSION IS MERELY ANGER WITHOUT ENTHUSIASM.
12. THE EARLY BIRD MAY GET THE WORM, BUT THE SECOND MOUSE GETS THE CHEESE.
13. I DRIVE WAY TOO FAST TO WORRY ABOUT CHOLESTEROL.
14. SUPPORT BACTERIA. THEY'RE THE ONLY CULTURE SOME PEOPLE HAVE.
15. MONDAY IS AN AWFUL WAY TO SPEND 1/7 OF YOUR WEEK.
16 A CLEAR CONSCIENCE IS USUALLY THE SIGN OF A BAD MEMORY.
17. CHANGE IS INEVITABLE, EXCEPT FROM VENDING MACHINES.
18. GET A NEW CAR FOR YOUR SPOUSE. IT'LL BE A GREAT TRADE!
19. PLAN TO BE SPONTANEOUS TOMORROW.
20. ALWAYS TRY TO BE MODEST, AND BE PROUD OF IT!
21. IF YOU THINK NOBODY CARES, TRY MISSING A COUPLE OF PAYMENTS.
22. HOW MANY OF YOU BELIEVE IN PSYCHOKINESIS? RAISE MY HAND.
23. OK, SO WHAT'S THE SPEED OF DARK?
24. HOW DO YOU TELL WHEN YOU'RE OUT OF INVISIBLE INK?
25. IF EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE GOING WELL, YOU HAVE OBVIOUSLY OVERLOOKED SOMETHING.
26. WHEN EVERYTHING IS COMING YOUR WAY, YOU'RE IN THE WRONG LANE.
27. HARD WORK PAYS OFF IN THE FUTURE. LAZINESS PAYS OFF NOW.
28. EVERYONE HAS A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY. SOME JUST DO NOT HAVE FILM.
29. IF BARBIE IS SO POPULAR, WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BUY HER FRIENDS?
30. HOW MUCH DEEPER WOULD THE OCEAN BE WITHOUT SPONGES?
31. EAGLES MAY SOAR, BUT WEASELS DO NOT GET SUCKED INTO JET ENGINES.
32. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU GET SCARED HALF TO DEATH TWICE?
33. I USED TO HAVE AN OPEN MIND, BUT MY BRAINS KEPT FALLING OUT.
34. I COULDN'T REPAIR YOUR BRAKES, SO I MADE YOUR HORN LOUDER.
35. WHY DO PSYCHICS HAVE TO ASK YOU FOR YOUR NAME?
36. INSIDE EVERY OLDER PERSON IS A YOUNGER PERSON WONDERING WHAT HAPPENED.
37. JUST REMEMBER--IF THE WORLD DID NOT SUCK, WE WOULD ALL FALL OFF.
38. LIGHT TRAVELS FASTER THAN SOUND, WHICH IS WHY SOME PEOPLE APPEAR BRIGHT UNTIL YOU HEAR THEM SPEAK
39. IF YOU'RE NOT LIVING ON THE EDGE, YOU'RE TAKING UP TOO MUCH ROOM.
40. LIFE'S TOUGH! WEAR A HELMET!
41. THE SOONER YOU FALL BEHIND, THE SOONER YOU CAN CATCH UP

A lot of these made me laugh as soon as I read them.  Maybe you should post some stuff, and we can add to the list!

lets collect the largest list of funny stuff in the forum!! [;D]

and perhaps eliminate some of the less funny ones, like maybe the last few.

Physiology & Medicine / Schizophrenia
« on: 23/12/2008 01:08:01 »
ok... I don't know where to start here...

first, I need to explain a little bit of background about this... I am very worried here.

I have recently entered into a relationship (a wonderful person, I assure you) with somebody who has not had the best of times in her life.  She's the first person who'll tell you that she has schizophrenia...  She tells me that before she had met me, she used to repeatedly delve into masochism and attempted suicide, but the only reason she is still alive today is her insanity...  Apparently, this... this mind she refers to as "he" would always stop her whenever she almost killed herself.  This same "he" is the one that she always says hates me, as if "he" was an imaginary boyfriend or something...

I never took this seriously, until just last Saturday she was telling me more about it.  I told her to tell "him" that I'm very grateful for his saving her, and meant it slightly in jest, as it was all still a joke to me.

a few minutes after, a text message came in on my phone, the format enlarged and italicized.  the message was "I was Not saving Her for you!".  It seemed... full of malice... I was filled with dread when I read that message... just a few seconds later, another text came in, her continuing the conversation.  I ignored it and asked her if she knew what she had sent before... she took a long time answering, and when she did, she showed that she did not remember sending the message, and she was disoriented... the message she sent right then was garbled, as if she was dizzy...

It honestly scared me, I was freaked out so much that I couldn't think straight... I am trying right now to deal with something I don't understand, that could directly affect the safety of somebody I care about...

What is schizophrenia, exactly? how does it work?  I need to know these things... anything i don't understand is something i want explained... and this defies all logic that I can pin to it...

does anyone at all know what's wrong?

Guest Book / Well hello!
« on: 19/12/2008 05:56:10 »
This is a forum I have not visited in a long while...

to those who remember this one, I would like to say hello! to those who do not, I don't blame you, i don't frequent this forum very often, and even when I do, I don't have very much to say.  [;)]

but anyway, my life has been slowing down lately, and I've finally found a point where i'm sitting down, doing nothing...

strange feeling, that.

I still possess a love of science! I always have, and probably always will, which is why i'm doing my best to find time for this forum!

just making my re-existance known to you all, all of you good people!  [;D]

General Science / How many bubbles are there in a bar of soap?
« on: 14/05/2008 03:59:10 »
I was watching the movie "Freedom Song" about the civil rights movement, and at one point in the movie the officials prevented the black people from registering to vote by requiring that they know how many bubbles there are in a bar of soap.

being a pursuer of the irrelevant, is such a thing possible to calculate?

how many bubbles ARE there in a bar of soap?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / What would happen if two electrons were forced to fuse together?
« on: 24/04/2008 04:42:17 »
Assuming infinite possible pressure and infinite electrons, what would happen if two electrons were forced to fuse together?

or is this fundamentally impossible?

Famous Scientists, Doctors and Inventors / well, the whole forum tells me this is what it's about...
« on: 23/04/2008 16:07:12 »
below the "famous people" forum, it asks the question "who invented the can opener"

this is misleading, because I havn't seen a single thread on that topic.

needless to say, this has made me infinitely curious: who DID invent the can-opener?

11
Just Chat! / 3 members... hmm...
« on: 23/04/2008 16:00:00 »
you're all hiding! who are you, and why are you hiding?

are you playing hide and seek?

*goes to look*

That CAN'T be true! / infinite geometric sequences
« on: 23/04/2008 05:09:37 »
apparently, adding up the total of the infinite geometric sequence 8+4+2+1+.5+.25+.125... and so on adds up to 16

it was explained to me that if you were to keep going, then you would never reach 16, and the most you could reach in your lifetime would be 15.9999999999999999... and so on, but if you were ever to reach infinite terms, then the total would reach 16.

ever the sceptic, I wrote a program that does this very thing in a programming loop, commanding it to stop the loop when 16 is reached.  the code was written to return the number of times the loop was run to reach the destination.

as I executed the program, I expected it to freeze the program as the computer tries to add up the impossible number in an infinite loop, but the code took virtually no time at all.

the number it gave me for how many times it ran the loop was 25.  How is this possible?

Just Chat! / changes in time...
« on: 02/04/2008 05:07:00 »
of the several changes that have taken this forum over the time I was gone, some were pleasant, some were unpleasant.

the question I have is, who remembers jolly?  his two messages to me show him as a guest, so it makes me wonder if he was banned...

I might list this among the more pleasant side effects because of his theorys that the moon has no gravity, and his shortsided defense of that statement.

so... did he go out in a blaze of glory? or did he fade into nothingness?

other than that... how was your day?

Just Chat! / lol?
« on: 02/04/2008 03:24:32 »
while I was playing my FPS based upon a RTS, while I was AFK, sombody yelled "tanks, FTW!".  Tired of it ATM, I went to play my RPG, and that made me think: why all the TLA's?  Fearing the wrath of the FBI or the CIA, I decided to keep my theory quiet.  I mean, WTH?

LOL  [;)]

15
Guest Book / hey, you there! yes, you! guess what?
« on: 31/03/2008 05:53:38 »

though I wasn't sure if it should be at that number... I think I remember being closer to 1000... or am I wrong??

Guest Book / well hello!

Here I am with 13 months of naked science membership, and along comes these people who have been here for a month, and have 2 or three times my posts.

I feel embarrased now...

Just Chat! / where has neilep been?
« on: 13/06/2007 16:12:31 »
I just looked at Karen's amazing number of posts, and compared it with Nielep's amazing number of posts, and She had more.  I then proceeded to look at his last active date, and it said somwhere around may.  Where has he been, he's let sombody beat him!

Just Chat! / It amazes me...
« on: 29/05/2007 15:54:13 »
I was in my English class, and the class clown, who happens to sit behind me and use excessive amounts of profanity, was being unusually annoying.  I turned around and asked him how many words he knew that had more than 3 syllables, and he had no idea what I was talking about.  Apparently it was because he didn't know what a syllable was.  How do people let themselves get like that?

Just Chat! / Peter: (fun!)
« on: 29/05/2007 15:47:16 »
go to the site: www.peteranswers.com and star playing with it.  If anybody gets it to work tell me.  It's kinda fun when you figure it out.
