General Science / Is science a religion.........well if not why is it defended as though it were

Well, as we all know, science doesn't work like that. Scientific research gets trapped in more box canyons than the Lone Ranger; does more U-turns than the average government; falls to certain death more often than Wile E Coyote; has more women in it than you might at first imagine (though probably not nearly enough); and generally gets the wrong answer.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Photos taken this morning of the horn antenna that discovered the CMB in 1964

As said earlier these photos were taken on the former Bell Labs grounds on Holmdel road in Holmdel NJ, USA.

COVID-19 / Do you know anyone who died of polio today? Nope, because the polio vaccine

works.  If the covid vaccines work would vaccinated people be dying?

COVID-19 / Is Eric Clapton is refusing to play at stadiums that require vaccinations?

Eric Clapton refuses to play venues requiring vaccines for concertgoers

British rock icon Eric Clapton has said he will not perform at venues that require concertgoers to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said proof of vaccination must be shown at clubs and venues from September.

Clapton said he will not perform anywhere there is a "discriminated audience present".

His announcement came through the social media accounts of an outspoken anti-vaccine activist.

The guitarist said he felt "honour bound" to make the statement, which was posted on Wednesday to the accounts of Italian architect and film producer Robin Monotti.

In May, Clapton said he had experienced a "severe" reaction to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

This puts Clapton at odds with Springsteen who is requiring people to have gotten the AstraZeneca vaccine to see his show on Broadway (which no one wants to see anyway)

So I applaud Eric Clapton who sees that he made a mistake in getting vaccinated as he could have died.

Guitar Gods may just be real Gods, thank you Mr. Clapton

New Theories / Re: If Tunguska was "2,000 times stronger" than the a-bombs, how did Earth survive?

Even if the Tunguska event was 200x, let alone 2,000x more powerful than the bombs my country dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, how did it not wipe out life on Earth, and how come only a few people noticed the event actually happen? I know it was in the desolate Siberian wilderness, populated by some farmers and Tsarists political prisoners, but still...
The Tunguska explosion is estimated to be 33 times the blast at Hiroshima or 500 kilotons.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event#:~:text=The%20exploding%20meteoroid%20was%20determined,release%20of%20approximately%20500%20kilotons.

It's also estimated as up to 30 MTons
"The 30 Mt (130 PJ) estimated upper limit blast power of the Tunguska event could power the same average home for more than 3,100,000 years."
from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TNT_equivalent

But the detail doesn't matter.
Most of Hiroshima survived the blast.
Almost all the damage was confined to sticky out bits that people had put there.
The flat bits were generally  fine.

That wiki page lists plenty of earthquakes etc that were much bigger than a thousand times the upper bound to the estimated energy from Tunguska.
A notable example is an hour's worth of sunshine: 104000 megatons.

No one actually knows what happened at Tunguska as it is speculated to be an impact event but there is no crater.  So for all we know this might have been a warp core explosion

All impacts create a crater whether it is an inch or thousand miles across

New Theories / Does admitted atheist Neil deGrasse Tyson, actually believe in God?
« on: 19/07/2021 13:50:32 »
If you watch the video he clearly talks about the Universe being a powerful computer simulation, meaning that everything including us was programmed.  Now I do not want to get into whether this is real or not, I just want to ask that if this were true, and Tyson says that it may be true, then we are the product of a great programmer who would fall into the vernacular of what God represents on the Earth.  So how can Tyson put forth this theory and claim that the computer simulations creator is not God?

Note, I have attached the description of the video which is real and if you search this topic you will find that it is real no matter how silly that this sounds.  That said if you find this ridiculous, please do not attribute that ridiculousness to me when I am not proposing this theory.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: It's hard to argue that we aren't living in a simulated world

New Theories / New discussion: How do we know the Universe is expanding, and expanding into nothing?

There was space which doesn't contain bread before the experiment, but does contain bread afterward.
True; but the space was not empty before the bread arrived.  What did the bread displace?
There is no known viable model of a bang happening at a location in otherwise empty space.  So the bread expanding into not-bread space analogy just doesn't work.  The bread is the space, and it having an edge would violate the cosmological principle on which all the theories rest.

What is the cosmological principle on which all the theories rest?
