Hi Zer0, thank you for your concern. I have very mild symptoms which would not stop me from doing anything I would normally do. The "boss" now appears to be on the mend. I was supposed to be working today but stayed home to take care of herself. However I did manage to achieve the necessary goal by talking a less technical person through the procedure by phone(generator reassembly).

Zer0, the escape velocity is determined by the gravity experienced at the launch site, and most likely by the topology of the mass responsible for the gravitation. As regards what happens to photons that cannot escape the event horizon of a black hole I can't tell you as I don't know. A member such as Halc or Origin should be able to help.

Indeed Zero, it is still around. The boss tested positive this morning and I am now waiting patiently for the inevitable onslaught. The positive aspect is that it appears no worse than a regular seasonal cold, so far.

Zero, the equation E=MCsq relates mass to energy. For a massless particle like a photon we use E=hF where h is the planck constant and F is the frequency. Theses symbols are not correct and I hope I am being clear, I can only find the reduced planck which is h/2pi.

Hi Zero. Throw a ball up in the air and what happens? it goes so high and then falls down again. Next fire a high powered rifle vertically and the bullet will go much higher but fall down again. When one reaches sufficient speed a projectile will not fall down and it will escape the earth's gravitational attraction, this is called the escape velocity and from memory(dodgy!) it is about 23000miles per hour for our planet. As a mass, planet or otherwise, becomes greater so also does the escape velocity increase and in the extreme case of a black hole the escape velocity exceeds 186000miles per second, ie the speed of light, and no light can escape.

Such is the modus operandi of the cocaine sniffer(snorter in the vernacular) but it would require participation of the victim to get the substance deep into the nasal mucosa. However I know of no agent capable of a quick knockdown that would not be fatal. A hammer would be equally effective.

BC, no disagreement. I was just pointing out the impracticality of such a quick knock down. 5mins for a rag soaked in chloroform is reasonable but I believe a high concentration could do it faster, such as a heated evaporator. Anyway, as I said I should have read your refs first, mea culpa.

Chloroform will not produce "instant insensibility", it would require 30-60seconds of a high concentration to do so. BC, I should have read the wiki article before replying and I would not argue with anything in it.

I don't look at crime fiction, I would prefer some chemistry ,physics or maths texts but I can answer some of your questions. Etorphine is not a tranquiliser, it is a highly potent analogue of morphine, about 2000times more potent. As regards an injection of morphine if administered intravenously it will have maximum effect in under one minute, if injected intramuscularly or subcutaneously it will take considerably longer and the time for full effect could vary wildly depending on the blood supply to the site of injection. Any dose of such a substance that led to rapid incapacity would certainly progress to death, if not quickly reversed.
