The Environment / Re: Could pollution from vehicle tyre wear contribute to ill-health?
« on: 16/12/2020 15:15:41 »
These are not my figures, but found ones,  still it's a problem or not a problem?  This is the question,  not having enough information / data.on this subject. should this be taken into account with air pollution?

The Environment / Could pollution from vehicle tyre wear contribute to ill-health?
« on: 16/12/2020 14:05:14 »
OK  the news today was about a coroner has ruled that air pollution contributed to the death of a nine-year-old girl in the first case of its kind in the UK. we hear about car exhaust pollution, but can the real reason be tyres? Some 5.8 grams per km of harmful particles produced by tyres during driving due to wear, Particulate matter is microscopic solids or liquid droplets that can be inhaled and exposure to this type of pollution can affect both your lungs and your heart.
Measurements found that 5.8 grams per kilometre of harmful particles are emitted by tyres as they wear when a car is being driven.
That compares to 4.5 milligrams per kilometre produced from exhaust pipes.
How come this isn't being addressed?  Also shoe trainers are made from problematic materials including nylon, synthetic rubber and plastic they wear down creating the same problematic particulates into the air the same way, so are we blaming all onto just one area of concern when we should be addressing the bigger picture here?

Physiology & Medicine / Re: When asked to think of a number, what colour is it?

“How do we assign  colour to shapes or numbers”   what I mean by this question is  how does the brain make a complex decision on what colour is associated to what number.

When someone says think of a number,
what colour is it?
What colour do you see it in your minds eye?
How do we assign  colour to shapes or numbers?
Do you see it in colour or just a clear shape.?

thanks i think i get it, is it the same way the earth and the moon isnt moving away from each other due to the expanding universe but galaxies are moving away from each other ?

If the universe is expanding... is the space between the fundamental particles that make up atoms expanding also? so are we expanding? and if not why only the space of the large expands?

If a plane crashes or a petrol tanker or a malaysian ferry goes downkilling 300 or so people it is forgotten in a few days but the 7 mile island partial melt down that killed no one ruined the American nuclear industry and has gone down in history as a major disaster.
In 1952 there was an air pollution incident in London caused by coal burning power stations and domestic fires, it resulted in an increase of 4000 deaths compared to a comparable period.
but the coal burning power stations are cleaner now and don't leave the area contaminated for 40 years after neither did they cause Thyroid Cancer, Leukemia, increase in nervous system disorders, diabetes, Birth defects, miscarriages, premature births, and stillbirth increases , neither was the farmland remained contaminated from the decaying components of plutonium.
After the Chernobyl accident, almost 400,000 people were forced to
leave their homes for their own safety – homes and villages that had been part of
their families for generations. Over 2,000 towns and villages were bulldozed to the ground, and was a global disaster .. this was just one nuclear power station mishap..there have been 22 incidents so far..  so you really think that is a good risk to take to get our power?

the problem it seems with nuclear technology is its danger when something unexpected happens those 1000 year natural events or just human error, ok you can say that the odds are against anything happening , but history has shown that if something can go wrong it will go wrong given time and the risk of disaster to so many lives isn't worth the risk. take a look at chernobyl
http://acidcow.com/pics/16330-chernobyl-today-52-pics.html
25 years and still the same.
i understand that was a different type of reactor and safety has improved , but you have to sit back and think what if.. and if that risk is to big then its not worth that risk.

Physiology & Medicine / Re: How do memories of dreams and memories of real events differ?
« on: 02/04/2012 18:41:34 »
"However, many elderly individuals seem to "remember" dream-like fantasies as if they are real."
this is my point, if you can visualize a dream and visualize a distant memory in the minds eye they seem the same.. but you still know which is which..not by the image but by something else... though as you said some people / old or brain damaged cant tell the difference.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / what happens to C02 if left in a fish tank for some time?
« on: 02/02/2012 16:53:23 »
if you had a sealed fish tank with a small brick of carbon dioxide at the bottom and let it Sublimate at room temp of say 21 c and at average ground level, would the gas stay at the bottom of the tank with air above it for all time or would it eventually mix with the the rest of the air (gas) in the tank?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Could Mount Etna's eruption set clocks 15 minutes fast?
« on: 01/08/2011 11:36:56 »
ok this is a bit of a puzzle can we blame the volcano? as thousands noticed that their clocks were running 15 minutes fast. The fast forward time keeping has affected a wide spectrum of digital clocks and watches - from computers through to alarm clocks. was it due to the quartz crystal oscillators in the clocks with very precise frequency 32,768 Hz some how getting zapped by a natural "EMP" electromagnetic pulse?

General Science / HEDD1 Explosive detector real or a dangerous fake?
« on: 15/06/2011 16:27:12 »
it sounds like it is the same product, under diffrent management

see link  to Unival group - David Vollmar  an expert in blast protection, any one fancy asking him a question? on the link..
http://www.armedforces-int.com/askexpert/           (under electronic Warfare)

Armed Forces International its a military suppliers directory offering the latest military news, contracts and tender, information

anyway
it amazes me how theses people can get away with it.. and unfortunatly lots of Pen pushers behind their .Gov Desks dont know enough about science and tech to dismiss this rubbish but just see a cheap price tag !

General Science / HEDD1 Explosive detector real or a dangerous fake?
« on: 15/06/2011 14:40:40 »
please have a look at this site link
HEDD1 its states that its an explosive detection device and designed to protect
people from hidden threats.. i work with explosives / pyrotechnics and this device looks like its a divining rod with as much science behind it as a Y shape Twig
they call it Pre-initialized magnetic interference.. so I'm asking you guys what do you think?

http://www.unival-group.com/unival_pdf_downloads/hedd1_manual_2010.pdf

most concerned that this is a genuine company that is selling this!
also if you think it works , i like an explanation please.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / is time conected directly to mass?
« on: 12/06/2011 14:56:25 »
for example is time compressed at a black hole due to its mass and its immense gravitational influence or will time remain the same? Could time be connected directly to the mass of matter, even a photon might have a very small mass therefore creating its own time?
Could there be areas in the universe where there is no mass/ matter in it.. a total absence of everything? Would time still exist there?
Your truly Science noob

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / expanding universe
« on: 22/04/2011 17:32:50 »
OK its a fact that the universe is expanding  but is the space between atoms expanding at the same rate too? and if not why did matter ie atoms and the space between them stop expanding shortly after the big bang?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Can the moon cause freak weather effects on Earth?
« on: 11/03/2011 17:06:52 »
The Moon will pass closer to the Earth than it has in almost a decade next week and it is believed by some that the 'supermoon' could cause havoc with the world's weather cause earth quakes and tsunami, though most scientists don't think so,  my question is what is the measured gravitational force of the moon on the earth and how much closer would the moon need to be to cause the world problems?

Cells, Microbes & Viruses / why dont we study people that never get ill?

is it chance or genetics?

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / What killed these birds?
« on: 11/01/2011 14:28:28 »
Volcanism ? in the UK? think not..
death by a bird disease? what all at the same time? also think not.
a rather cold snap- not really too localised.. unless they flew to far up where the air is colder and less oxygen
magnetic pulse? doubt it very hard to create such a large pulse that would kill anything unless many times greater than the suns field. but maybe birds following the earths distorted magnetic lines and flying to high?  i think that could be a real contender, as for the fish could be lots of things.
anyway it shouldn’t be something that we all just dismiss though we need good scientific proof after the speculations.
