I understand that when a gas expands it cools but why does it cool?

Thanks, Mike  [:)]

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Help With Rays/Waves
« on: 19/06/2009 16:42:22 »
Hey,

I'm wondering if somebody can help explain to me about waves/rays in a physical way. For example, i know Alpha radiation is a helium nucleus, beta an electron and gamma a ray, but are rays physical matter?

I dont know if i make any sense but i want to get an image in my head of what they are in terms of the physical bits.

Thanks, Mike

Hey,

I'm wondering if there are some evolutionary reaosns why we find things like our babies really cute, is it so they dont get abandoned or something?

Thanks, mike  [:)]

Physiology & Medicine / Why are some people right and some left handed?
« on: 19/05/2009 16:07:19 »
Hey,

I've wondered why some people are right and some people are left handed? Is it just a random thing that occurs in nature, is it a mutation like blue and brown eyes?

Thanks, Mike

Physiology & Medicine / How big are nerves?
« on: 04/05/2009 16:26:49 »
Hey,

I've always imagined nerves as microscopic wires that are in our bodys, but how big are they and are they visible to the naked eye?

Thanks, mike

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / What is the smallest thing?
« on: 29/04/2009 22:46:46 »
Hey,

I'm wondering what the smallest thing is that we know of. Smallest thing i can think of are sub-atomic particals but i don't know very much  [:D]

Thanks, Mike

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / How do rockets in space propel themselves?
« on: 27/04/2009 17:50:06 »
Hey,

I'm wondering how rockets propel themselves in space with the little burner things they have as if its a vacuum, what does it have to push against?

Thanks, Mike

« on: 23/04/2009 22:33:59 »
Hey,

I remember when i went to the hospital a couple of years ago, they used this amazing white cream on my hands and other parts of the body which made the area it covered numb (i wish i could have some at home!!) [:D]

How does this work?

Thanks, Mike

Assuming sport and things like that releases more testosterone, does that mean that sporty people go through puberty quicker?

Physiology & Medicine / Feeling shaky, weak, not with it... Hypoglycemia?
« on: 13/03/2009 18:44:58 »
Hey,

I've always wondered why it is usually nearing the end of the school day, i can quite quickly get very shaky, i don't feel like everything's normal if that makes sense and i feel rather weak, sometimes worse than others. I ask because its pretty annoying, sometimes worrying and not very pleasant. I usually rush home and constantly eat cake until it goes which makes me believe its to do with blood sugar?

Thanks

Mike

Michael Perry asked the Naked Scientists:

Naked scientists,

I'm wondering, if a bomb or a similar explosion went off underwater, would
the  water amplify or dampen the blast?

Hey,

Today at school (im 14) we had our polio, tetanus and diferia or whatever they're called, luckily the needle itself didnt hurt me, but why does it ache slightly afterwards, even hours later?

Thanks

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / How close has the moon been as it's moving away?
« on: 24/02/2009 16:51:21 »
Hey! I'm curious as we know the moon is moving away 3cm a year or whatever the figure is, but how close has it been before it started moving away? Would we have seen a bigger moon (im thinking when there was early complex life on earth)in the sky??

Interesting to know!!

Thanks

Hey,

Just wondering why car wheels look like they are going backwards when they get faster??

Thanks
