General Science / Re: Is Capitalism for the greater good?

Thanks, I watched 30 seconds of it, but wasn't amused.

Just Chat! / Re: Will Trumpty Dumpty's travel ban be reinstated?
« on: 11/02/2017 19:02:57 »
I think President Trump is supported by almost everybody in the USA,  except the television and newspapers.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: What would the universe be like with space and time exchanged?
« on: 11/02/2017 18:36:11 »
Perhaps the Universe is like a perfect DVD disc - it constantly displays information, and never wears out.  No matter how many times the disc is played, the same information is always there.

Admittedly, present-day DVD discs do wear out, because they're made of aluminium coated with plastic.  But suppose they were made of gold coated with diamond?

How long would they last then?

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Is obesity a sin of gluttony or sloth?
« on: 11/02/2017 18:22:59 »
This whole discussion revolves around bowels. Why should we have bowels?  They're smelly and very disgusting.
I hope future AI computers won't have to sit on the toilet to empty their bowels.  Couldn't they just do a clean "garbage-collection" of  no longer needed data, then digitally dump it, without making smells - wouldn't that be an advance?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Why can't light penetrate the event horizon?

We humans seem to have got very confused in all this.  Perhaps we need to contact advanced aliens who could show us the right way?

General Science / Re: How credible are the translations of the Sumerian Clay Tablets?
« on: 09/02/2017 17:16:11 »
Don't you think the only reason that Michael Ventris is still remembered, is simply this: because he named the script that he supposedly deciphered:  "LINEAR-B".
That name resonates so strongly, that he's been immortalised.  If he'd called the script anything else, he'd be forgotten.

Technology / Re: Why can't we just drill to the Earth's core and harness the energy as fuel?

If we drilled to the Earth's core, it might be dangerous.  Could it make the whole Earth explode?
No.
Well, doesn't that  "No",  smack a bit of "famous last words"?  I mean no doubt the Earth would remain stable.  If left to itself.
But if humans start interfering, by inserting big artificial drills into its hot core, who knows what could happen?

Just Chat! / Re: What proportion of girls study physics at school?
« on: 07/02/2017 01:28:37 »
Well I can't fight against moderators who think that women are interested in Science, when they aren't.

The Environment / Re: Fukushima:- How bad is the current situation? and what can be done to solve it?
« on: 07/02/2017 01:23:02 »
Wouldn't it be possible to re-start the reactors?  They can't be giving off much nuclear radiation. Even if they are, won't they provide useful electricity?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Why can't light penetrate the event horizon?

See, humans always start fighting each other, even on a science forum, they go to war

Like I said already, we post here to look at our posts.

Apparently almost 50% of UK schools have no girls studying advanced level physics.
Any idea what it is in other/your countries?

A close friend of mine has suggested that girls don't study advanced level physics, because they aren't really interested in physics.
They only want to find a good husband, get married, and give birth to children.
Is that true, do you think?

General Science / Re: How credible are the translations of the Sumerian Clay Tablets?
« on: 07/02/2017 00:06:37 »
Why believe anything in a Sumerian clay tablet?  It's obviously pre-scientific bollocks.

I would like to be able to thank a poster.

New Theories / Re: Do Neutrinos exist ?
« on: 06/02/2017 23:40:50 »
Could it be that Neutrinos don't really exist, they're just something Physicists have made up, like Black Holes?

General Science / Re: What exactly is so 'great' with the metric system?

Something is there, and it's called a Higgs boson. Then again, there is also 'phonons'. It's actually pretty interesting because it fits a pet-idea of mine :)
That we, the universe, and all, build from the simple to complicated, and the world of ideas is the ultimate result of it, just as real as 'constants'. Actually read a guy involved in both physics and biology as I remember present an idea where 'entropy' more or less demanded life from 'life less' particles. Think I will write about that one later. Just hope I can find the article :)

I wish everyone who posted on here was as intelligent as you.  You know there's no such thing as the "Higgs Boson". It's made-up crap.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: How much brain damage is caused by cosmic rays?
« on: 06/02/2017 23:22:44 »
Human brains have got vastly more neurons than mouse-brains. Therefore a dose of cosmic radiation which might severely incapacitate a puny mouse-brain, will have only slight effect on a human brain.  The human brain has plenty of reserve capacity.
