So the diamond thing was probably close - some form of carbon?

So its a crystal of some chemical that we have in us?

Chemistry / Re: How do I make a 1 in 4 dilution?
« on: 28/05/2009 08:41:12 »If I wanted to make a 1 in 4 dilution do you use 50 microlitres in 350 microlitres?
If you added 50 into 350, that would be a 1 in 8 dilution (50/400). 50 parts in 350 is a 1 in 7 dilution (50/350). Its elementary maths. So you want a 1/4 therefore 50 should be added to 150 (50/200).
Water is always a 1 in 4 solution, it's just that the other 3 parts are water too!

General Science / Why complementary colors go so well together?
« on: 27/05/2009 15:40:27 »
Is it not similar to music, in that the frequencies of the complimentary light wavelengths are harmonics, i.e., they are multiples of the frequency of the root colour?

Don - did you click on the link that RD put up? I think that although they don't get rickets, there is evidence that blacks do suffer vit D deficiencies in northern latitudes.

General Science / Re: Why does traffic clump together?
« on: 27/05/2009 12:17:16 »dent, I get a lot of wind noise from the sunroof at anything over 130mph...how do you get around that?
That's EASY! I don't have a sunroof...

Technology / Help please - re bridge engineering
« on: 27/05/2009 11:40:06 »
Not sure, but I did do a summer school with the Open University, and one of the tasks was to build a bridge (perhaps 12" across, or 30 cms) out of wire which was then tested to destruction for load bearing. My design won [], and it was an arch with triangles structure. I'll see if I can find a picture of something similar...
So, a bit like this
http://www.go-explore-trans.org/images/2009/jan-feb/tynset_glulam_bridge.JPG
but if I recall, it was like half a bike wheel, with the traffic crossing along the bottom
[diagram=457_0]
No doubt there are better engineered structures, but this was quick, simple and very effective.

It seems to have a bit of a reaction, yes. I'm glad that some have expressed their anxieties about it too, which hopefully will mean that there are fewer scoldings towards honest but incorrect answers.

« on: 26/05/2009 22:21:57 »You'd need to wear a burka before you need worry about vitamin D deficiency.
Nah, I can't get away with those. They never match my eyes.

A very calm and rational response Mil! I salute you. Yes, if you want to get ahead, get a hat. Or become Zaphod. (Must avoid STBing my own thread...)
I think that you're right - a big hat for walking in is the answer.
But do you think that there could be a knee-jerk reaction. Now parents won't let their kids out without SPF 924, there may be a generation growing up who have an intolerance to moderate sunshine?
