Why do my joints making popping and cracking sounds?
« on: 23/02/2018 13:35:27 »
Kristina asks:

"I am a massage therapist and I notice, during a massage session, sometimes my joints make these pop and crackle noises and other times things move quietly. I move a lot during my job and some days are louder than others. I’m a yogi and eat well mostly. My question is: what makes my joints make these “pop” sounds?"

What do you think?

I assume you would recognise tedons snapping across a bone.
The other cause is the same as when people flex a joint eg finger to make it crack. The synovial fluid in the joint contains dissolved gasses eg nitrogen and when the capsule is stretched this can come out of solution and  form a bubble, that is what you hear the bubble forming. It can also happen the other way round where a bubble or cavity collapses.

I am 63 years old and have a popping in my hip joint, where the femur attaches. X-ray shows this noise is made by an irregular bearing surface caused by osteo-arthritis. Probably not the same problem you're experiencing but it adds to the body of answers.
