Women who run for cover when coming face-to-face with a spider have been offered a new explanation for their phobia: it is in their genes. Skip related content
Research at a US university found females associate the eight-legged critters with fear more than males, most of whom react with indifference.

Oh yeah!!! I can asure you, Dr David Rakison, I can be just as scared as any woman, when it comes to eight-hairy legged gits.

I don't like spiders either and I recognise it's irrational, but this makes no difference. As my wife likes them even less, it's me who has to dispose of them (either humanely catching and releasing them or killing them). I notice there seem more appearing indoors this time of year; I guess they are trying to find somewhere warmer. There was a huge one in my flat a couple of days ago (huge for the UK - about 2.5" leg span with a large body). How the heck do they get in? The flat is modern and there doesn't seem to be any holes or gaps big enough.

A few year ago on holiday (I can't remember whether it was Malta or Cyprus), I went to the bathroom and above the door was a huge bird eating spider - and I mean huge. We called the hotel manager and he came to the room, removed his shoe and swatted it. I was really sorry then. I thought he would have just caught it and put it out somewhere. I notice that (again irrationally) I was not so afraid, and respected the life more, of this big spider than of smaller ones. Thinking about it, it is the 1" to 2" ones that I dislike the most. Why?

i AM OK WITH EVEN BIG PUMPKIN SPIDERS.. BUT NOT DADDY LONG LEGS OR BIG FURRY SPIDERS! lol tHE REST i CAN PICK UP AND REMOVE TO OUTSIDE.. THE ONES WITH THE RED SHAPE ON THEIR BACK i USE A CUP OR PAPER TO REMOVE.. BUT THE OTHERS JUST PICK THEM UP AND TAKE THEM OUT IF i CAN CATCH THEM i USUALLY HAVE NO TROUBLE....NO IF IT IS MULTIPLE SPIDERS AND THEY HAVE GONE DOWN INTO MY CLOTHING THATS DIFFERENT.. THEN IT SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF ME.. BECAUSE i HAVE NOT GOT THE UPPER HAND THEY DO!

Arachnophobia isn't completely irrational when you think about the black widow

i used to be slightly afraid. the best way of overcoming any fear or emotion is analysing it to see if it has any useful function for you. if it doesn't (i.e fear of spiders in england) every time you feel it, just remind yourself it has no useful function. that makes it a lot, lot easier to deal with in other ways then. it's worked for me, but i have an unusual mindset when it comes to emotions i think..

Never been scared of them. They are quite useful they capture and kill other insects that maybe more annoying.

I was as a child scared to death of them.. my brother used to chase me with them torturing them it was sick especially the daddy long legs then one day I worried myself sick and decided to use reverse phschology on him and I called him over to look at the spider and then I preended to not be afraid and asked him what kind it was then he told me and walked away.. after that I froze inside but started being less annoyed visibly to him which in turn got me closer and soon I was holding them to show him different ones.. then the big pumpkin spidrs.. they were really cool! orange with black dots they were beautiful.. we had a couple different varieties!

I'm good with them unless they are crawling on me.
Come to think of it I jump when, well, anything is crawling on me regardless of the number of its legs.

I try to use this logic with my mrs, but to no avail.  I'd far rather have spiders in my house than mosquitoes, but she's nearly paralysed with fear by them.

Interestingly, when we were working out in the Indonesian rainforest, she was far less scared of them, even the fairly large ones we saw.
