Title: Can polyurethane be used for low-cost housing?
Post by: Gabby on 12/04/2009 20:30:02
Gabby  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris

I am a Grade 6 learner in South Africa.I am doing a project on low cost housing, and am interested in finding out if a polyutherane interlocking panel system could be used in the construction of low cost housing.

I need to invetsigate low cost effective, weatherproof materials that could be used in the construction industry. Perhaps polyutherane moulds could be cast, liquid polymers poured into the cast, which when dry hardens.

It would be most appreciated if you could let me know if this could work.Obviously I would not want to come up with anything that is not eco friendly.

Kind Regards
Lauren den Besten

What do you think?

Polyurethane is flammable and releases poisonous gases when burned ...

Polyurethane polymer is a combustible solid and will ignite if exposed to an open flame for a sufficient period of time. Decomposition products include carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and hydrogen cyanide. Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus in enclosed areas.
