Naked Science Forum has made possible some very serious medical progress with this under-researched, crippling malady that has destroyed lives, careers and relationships. Despair and hopelessness have been alleviated with this thread. Serious medical researchers have been attracted.

You can't post something like what RD wrote in a serious and extremely sensitive medical discussion and expect people -- who are suffering and somewhat desperate -- to not be upset. I was actually quite blown away by it. If it wasn't meant to mock or attack, which seems unlikely, then it was certainly thoughtless.

Yes, let's get real: this is a science forum but the POIS thread is more about providing information, support and therapy.
Affecting a small minority of people does make it a niche subject, which due to the nature of the subject is clearly adult. That's not a criticism but a fact.
In my opinion this subject does deserve its own forum, for trying to deal with it in a single thread on a forum intended for science discussions can only ensure that the subject is not adequately dealt with; it may be better than nothing, but not by much. The number of posts in that thread, and the number of views certainly indicates that the subject deserves more attention than a single thread in an unrelated forum can enable and ultimately retards the progress that the subject really deserves.
All sorts of people are mocked, and all sorts of people feel suicidal, but that is no excuse for making such fantastic accusations, none of which I'm sure you actually believe; your responses were just a straightforward and near frenzied attack on someone else who you perceived, rightly or wrongly, to be unsympathetic to your beliefs. If someone says something you don't like you have all the right in the world to ignore them, but you don't have the right to attack them.

Lee, I have no ego to defend, but yes I do feel supremely protective of this group.
The thread is equally about medical science. Our thread has been cited in the British Medical Journal and many other places and has garnered some top scientific research attention.
I am very deeply disheartened that you cannot seem to acknowledge that - very simply - hurtful things were said.
Regardless of what you think.

I've locked this topic so that people can cool off a bit.
We're all friends here and we don't want any wars.
There are far too many important and interesting threads to respond to here without us all wasting our time on arguments and rebuttals.
