Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / If the Universe is expanding, what's happening to entropy?
« on: 21/04/2017 10:47:18 »
I have got really confused by the definition of the laws of thermodynamics and how they are represented.

0. Heat flows from a difference in temp.
1. Energy cannot be created or destroyed
2. Entropy always goes up
3. at t=0 entropy equals 0

This basically says to me...

1.  higher t = higher entropy
2. t is always going up
3. So everything that ever happens is irreversible and will eventually turn the universe into a giant oven.

BUT..

The universe is expanding, meaning volume change, meaning temperature drop, so entropy is decreasing.. OR is the rate of the universe expanding maintaining a constant level of entropy in the system?

I don't get it. someone must be wrong and although it is probably me, I cant spot the logic holes.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / How old is the earth and how did it develop?
« on: 01/10/2015 16:05:31 »
I read the data for it.. and potentially disagree with the findings..

The earth has been dated using radiometric dating, surely this would just refer back to when the material was formed which we are told from an exploding supernova not when the planet was formed by the aggregation of these materials.. So would the 4.5 billion years refer to the supernova that gave the solar system its material occurred? as i see no way (unless the earth formed with an element of nuclear fusion to create heavier elements) to actually measure the separation and aggregation of the materials into the ball we know of as earth.

General Science / How does capillary action work?
« on: 14/09/2015 16:28:07 »
Heres a good one for you that stumps me everytime...

Capilliary action can allow a fluid to go uphill.. this gains potential energy.. where from? I know its clever stuff with surface tensions but when i watch a fluid flow literally uphill I can't help but feel that I am being cheated! I watched liquid helium doing crazy stuff and thought I would see if you guys knew a thing or two about this free energy!

Like a rollin stone!

New Theories / Light speed magnetism
« on: 14/09/2015 12:15:03 »
Okay, magnets in hand.. we are travelling just short of the speed of light 0.99c dont know how we got that fast.. but that doesnt matter..

We fly past a clump of say iron filings.. the magnet attracts the iron filings.. instantly speeding them up to our speed (well almost of course.. I dare say it would have an impact but bear with)

Firstly, forgive my ignorance, but where does the energy come from when a fixed magnet attracts material.. I am going to stick with magic.. but I would benefit from education!

More importantly.. IF those iron filings were actually travelling past me at the speed of light and were heavier than I.. do we get attracted to them and actually speed up?

This then leads me to.. IF I were travelling at 0.9c in starship enterprise.. and shot a magnet ever so slightly in front of me out the torpedo tube, would that magnet attract me (newton says yes) and if i continuted to do so, speeding up ever so slightly each time up to c, would I then be able to do it again? (why couldn't I?) would this then speed me up past the speed of light?

Theres probably a physics safety catch in there somewhere that stops me firing my magnet torpedo at the speed of light obviously something to do with the speed of the magnetic waves or something..

Okay lets ratchet it down a notch..

Body A
Magnet B
A+B travelling at 50m/s
Eject B (self propelled ofc none of this reaction force on A malarky thank you very much) at 51m/s
A attracts B and B attracts A  we end up with A+B travelling at 50.5m/s (if body's are identical masses i assume?)

and since this is magic driving this, could this be a way of propelling space craft?
