My internet line went down and it took me seven calls to tiscali to get them to admit it was there fault and correct it. Is this a record?
-
No. A record is a type of disc that you can stick a needle on at the requisite angle and jig about to the resultant sound.
-
smarty pants
-
That's me! [^]

Although Tiscali are not the worst, they certainly never come top for quality of customer service.
-
AOL used to be pretty rubbish too, but since Carphone Warehouse bought AOL UK their tech support has improved markedly (in my experience).
-
My Internet went down again. The help line guy suggested that I unplugged the cable from the router to the ADSL socket and turned it around and plug the ends in again. I replied that, that would have the same effect as me standing on my head and sticking the ends of the cable into my nostrils. He wasn't amused.
"Have you changed your filters?" was his next suggestion.
"I have unplugged all my phones," I retorted.
"The problem has to be at your end"
" I had the exact same problem two days ago and it is at your end"
"Is your router software up to date?"
"I've tried two different roters and a modem, which part of 'the problem is at your end' do you not understand?"
"I will escilate your problem to the second level"
"So you are going to do absolutely nothing now?"
"We will report back within 48 hours"
Exactly 48 hours later they phoned up and fixed the fault immediately. Too late for me and my son to get my website online.
AAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

They are cheap though. We used to have Tiscali, but only for a year or so.. We then changed back to BT because Tiscali was too unreliable, and their help service was rubbish. But atleast it was cheaper.
-
Don't get me started on helpdesks. I'm in a long running battle with the netgear one. I have a workaround but they will have a major problem once the newer firmware is installed on their routers and people start buying them.
I usually use the e-mail support and three times it ended up in them telling me to phone them. I then spend 30 minutes on the phone expalaining the problem and the guy will say he doesn't know the answer. I eventually got to second line support and they went through setting up a network connection, duh, I was already connected to the internet. Now I just go on there to yank their chain.
The most reliable IP seems to be AOL, but it comes at a price, not only the cost but the amount rubbish it puts on your PC.
-
Yup.. The helpdesks are rubbish.
My dad needed to wait like an hour on the phone for someone to pick up.. you know with the silly music in the background..
BT is good. But we asked for 8mb internet speed. And it always seems to be at around 1-2gb. Whenever we call them, it goes up to about 5-6gb which is great.. And then a few days later its back to 1-2 gb.. LOL! It's all a part of a scam like thing.
-
The gadget show has a speed checker on their website and ours is frequently well down on what it should be. Still can't get my website online as my new host is having problems.
-
What is your website about?

I'm probably going to start my own hosting service soon. I'll keep you informed.

Yes yes do [:D]
What is a hosting service though?
-
A host is where you put your website so that it's available for people to visit.
-
Oh.. What's the website going to be about? [:D]
-
Whose?
-
Yours!
-
Seany mine is my business website. I do science shows and do science stuff for children's magazines. I do it for love more than money.
-
That sounds really cool!
It's like Horrible Science.[;D] The magazine thing.. Fun LOL

That is very cool! I did not know that.. I hope you get it up and going soon and that your host remedies their problem.. Good luck and I think that is terrific!
-
I add my good wishes!
-
Seany - I've got my Beaverland site (which is undergoing a major re-write) that's a Friends Network type of thing with a forum, chat (with audio & fideo facilities), games, quiz league, and other goodies. Plus I've got my website design business and a site about autism. If I start my own hosting business, I'll park them all there.
The main reason I want to start a hosting business is so that I can offer a full website service - design, coding, URL selling, hosting & maintenance. I will even be able to build & maintain people's eCommerce sites. That will save customers having to deal with 3 or 4 different companies.
-
That sounds cool!!
I haven't checked out BeaverLand in a while. Will do so now [:)]
-
Don't bother yet, nothing much has been happening there. Wait until I upload the new version.
-
OH.. I made an account yesterday [;D]
-
That's OK. All member names will be transferred to the new system when I upload it.
-
Yayyayay.. Couldn't you make a better address?
Like.. BeaverLand.com..!
-
Hi DocB. what is your interest in Autism?
-
Sharon - it all started because of a friend of mine who has an autistic daughter. She wanted to know more about it but all the sites she found were either too basic or they explained things in technical terms that she couldn't understand.
I did some research and put together a few documents for her. I also sent them to another girl I know whose son is autistic. She liked them and said she wished there was something like it on the net. Well, what is any self-respecting rodent to do? I did further research and spoke to some experts in the field.
The more I looked into it, the more I realised that there really is a need for a site that goes into detail and explains technical terms in simple language. That's something I'm good at - explaining complicated things in a simple way.
My site explains genetics and mutations, and how some theories explain autism in those terms. I go into the psychological theories such as Simon Baron-Cohen's "Extreme Male Brain" theory. Then there are the physiological and environmental theories. I've also addressed the issue of MMR vaccine in what I hope is an unbiased way. I hope my explanations of technical terms will enable others to read the more scientific sites with a better understanding.
I've got a dictionary which pops up an explanation of a word if you click on it.
I managed the genetic and psychological sides fairly easily, but the environmental and, especially, the physiological issues were a nightmare. I was having to find definitions of technical and medical terms in practically every sentence I read.
So far I've got just over 100 pages and I'm, not finished yet. I still have the physiological issues to finish off. I also want to add a Wiki feature to allow visitors to upload their own stories, a forum, and, maybe, a chatroom. Plus, I'm collecting links to other sites about autism as well as support groups and equipment suppliers.

When I lived in Denmark I had a friend who's son had autism. He hadn't been diagnosed then but I could see this boy wasn't just a difficult child as they thought. Eventually they got the diagnosis and the mother was empowered by it but the father was destroyed. Everyone I've met with an autistic child has had to fight for information, help and well just about everything.
I work with a lot of home educators and a lot of autistic children are home educated. It has become an interest of mine too especially as I think my eldest son is low on the autistic spectrum.
Anyway, you might want to try the education otherwise website as I think they may have information for parents with autistic children.
-
I know their site, and it's very useful. However, what I'm doing is pulling everything together in 1 place. As far as I can tell there's nothing like it yet.
You're right about ASD kids being educated at home. There aren't enough places in specialist schools so it's a necessity.
Angie & Sarah said exactly the same about having to fight to get any information or help.
-
Are you going to join my fan club now? [;)]
-
Have you seen Turnipsocks legs?
Seriously, anyone who spends their own time on something they are pasionate about is fine with me.
-
What about TurnipSocks' legs?

Tiscali, ASD, Turnipsock's legs... I fail to see the connection. [???]
-
Yes.. That's where I lost myself too [???]
-
Boys if you look on the turnipsock fan club strand in this section Page 2 you will see some pictures of turnipsocks legs and realise why I'm in his han club and not the, cuddley but short legged, Beaver fan club.
-
Yes.. But it was a random post on this topic!!
And I really don't tend to go around admiring people's legs, no matter how well shaved they are!! [???]

Not even Jessica Alba's legs?
-
Now that's a different matter [;D]
-
OK.. Well I don't go blabbing on Science forums about Alba's legs [;D]
-
They're worth blabbing about. In fact her whole frame is decidedly blabworthy.
-

Agreed. Maybe not so in a "Tiscali must die" thread.

"Tiscali must die" is an anagram of "Jessica Alba is a babe"
(That may not be strictly accurate)
-
LOL..

Science is all about exploring tangets.
-
Yes.. I am sure it is
-
Science is all about exploring tangets.
I'd love to explore Jessica Alba's tangents! (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Fdrooling%2F3.gif&hash=df922f67cf6edd9d299f37cc182bd453)
-
*Goes look at "tangents" in dictionary.com*
*Thinks for a while*
*Is not what the "v" word Seany thought it was.. Phew*
-
*Finally realises the mathematical term "tangent"*

And Seany also luffs her fashion sense!! [;D]
-
I don't think the powers that be will like that photo. [:(]
-
Hmm. I assume so!!.. Will do some editting..
-
It is always good to keep abreast of fasion but I think the moderators might remove this unless we say it is a discussion on bras and breast cancer.
I can see how distracting this tangent is though!
-
Very distracting indeed. Lexa Doig is cute too. When she was in Andromeda, she was the spitting image of my ex-fiancee.
-
I hope you traded her in for the real thing!
-
Yes.. All started with these legs!!
Editting almost finished.
-
Well I tink it's a masterpiece! [^]
-
X marks the spot. I don't think she has a sunken chest though.
-
Huh.. You lost me..

LOL LOL LOL!!!!!! ^^^

Treasure is usually found at an x sign on pirate maps. Treasure is buried in sunken chests. This lady has an X but she does not have a sunken chest she has the opposite.

I think Seany should have used a blue cresent, more appropriate.
-
OH OH.. Thanks for making that clear
-
No thank you for making the boob unclear, it was making me jealous.
-
LOL!
-
I went to the website and printed it out the unedited version. Now, when I look up from my computer screen, I think of you, my filly. (NO, not you, Seany! Sheeeesh!)
-
Take care someone might edit your eyes so that you can no longer see them!!!!
-

And just who might do that; a moderator?
-
No they don't seem to worry about nudity. I've seen quite a bit of it especially on the corpse strand. It is only culture that is removed. Oh and perhaps your eyes.

Whatever..
-
You should lend him some red crosses.
-
I have plenty!

Please don't get me on the suggestive thing again or Karen will fall out with me.
-
What suggestive thing..?
-
I have plenty!
AAAAAAAAAARGH
-
Huh.. Maybe I didn't get it again.. I was just playing along..
-
Please don't get me on the suggestive thing again or Karen will fall out with me.
If Karen falls out we'll have to edit that too! [:D]
