In many mythologies and religions there is a golden age/garden of Eden and then the illnesses come (Pandora opens her box).

Now all of these things have one thing in common, they are the beginnings of society, bringing social norms, outlining prescribed non bestial ways of behaving. Darwin on the other hand says survival of the fittest and let the beasts run riot.

Has the advent of society led us to destroy ourselves?

Chemistry / Is nitrogen based liquid fuel a viable energy storage solution?

The liquid fueled Ice has fantastic advantages over solid or gaseous counterparts, two of which are the fuel is easily managed and waste products are gaseous. Unfortunately the fuel used is not renewable generally.

The atmosphere generally has 2 gasses in it, oxygen (~20~%)and nitrogen at around 80, along with varoius other small amounts of other substances. It strikes me it would be beneficial that these 2 gasses would make ideal waste products of any renewable energy storage cycle. Would it be possible to make a liquid fuel from them?

James Dyson himself says his inspiration came from seeing cyclonic separation of sawdust at saw Mills, so how did he gain a patent for his vacuum.

I have some led Christmas lights strung around a room. They have the usual red green blue yellow led colours. The ambience of the colours I quite nice, objects appear nicely defined, even if the actual lux is low, far nicer than the average light bulb. Why is this?

Just Chat! / Why are the 'essential workers' going on strike?

Lots of strikes around at present and it occurs to me that these are the workers that worked the way through the corona furlough scheme. You are not getting car workers or house builders joining them. Seems like the essential workers are ahead of everyone else and we will probably see more strikes in future.

In the news this year we have heard threats and hysteria concerning nuclear bomb strikes, missiles too fast to intercept etc. If air defences where equipped with nuclear explosive intercept missiles to cause nuclear blasts in the atmosphere with the hope of intercepting incoming missiles what effect would this have on the environment ?

In the U.K. the sun does not achieve great angles. In winter the angles are are poor, the length of day minimal and the energy usage highest. Would solar panels be best mounted vertically ?

General Science / What should we do with radioactive waste from the nuclear power industry ?

With the world transfixed on reducing carbon emissions and the Ukraine war showing the vulnerability in energy supplies, it is almost certain the world will embark upon nuclear energy as a means to secure energy security and lower co2.  This will mean a vast increase in waste. How are we to deal with it ?

1) long term storage as is touted at present for the current scrap heap of radioactive junk.

2)launch it into to the sun

3)bury it deep by a subduction zone

4)throw it in the Mariana trench or similar deep ocean. The Pacific seems to have been able to deal with the Fukushima spill.

5)keep it until we find a way to transmogrify said radioactive waste to products of non hazardous nature

6)use the thorium fuel cycle

Or something else.

The Environment / Is global warming man-made?

Now we are all aware that the earth is getting warmer, recently there has been a huge spike in temperature. There is a massive drought in the western USA that is considered to be exceptional, according to Lake sediment studies happening only every 1000ish years.

As you can see over the last 1000 years the temperature has fluctuated, but there is a massive spike starting in about 1990 which coinsides with the megadrought in california. Has this sort of spike in heat conditions happened before similarly to the drought, could the recent warming be an anomoly.

Call me a cynic, but it seems to me that Boris Johnson has been used by the Conservative party to gain a majority and ousted from the job. What are Mr Johnson grave flaws? I know he had a fine for corona breaches, but he did not drive to Barnard Castle etc. It seems to me the Conservatives have fabricated dissatisfaction, have  siezed upon any reason to harangue Mr Johnson. I remember the 90s and 80s conservatives with the sleeze of cash for questions, bribery in arms deals, prostitutes with ministers etc etc. I remember the Labour government of the 2000s, bombing Iraq and making up evidence, hindu a honours for cash etc.
